Symon Wilde’s ultra-consistent mare Tycoon Tara has opened the narrow favourite in a wide open Mannerism Stakes 2015 betting market for Caulfield this weekend.
There are nine mares making up the field for Saturday’s $150,000 Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) on Blue Diamond Stakes Day, which runs as the Premier Signs Stakes this Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.
The bookmakers are having a hard time separating the genuine contenders from the pretenders in the small field with five of the mares at single figures in the latest Mannerism Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.
At $3.80 the shortest priced is Written Tycoon four-year-old Tycoon Tara who has won four of her nine starts to date.
She was last seen stepping up to Group 3 company for the first time to win the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield a fortnight ago by a tidy one and three-quarter lengths.
Jockey Ben Melham stays on and the duo jump from the outside barrier after doing it from gate eight of 10 last time out.
Occupying the next two lines of Mannerism Stakes betting are then close second elect Politeness ($4) and Girl Guide ($4.20).
The Robert Smerdon-trained local Street Sense four-year-old Politeness comes off a third to Tycoon Tara in the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes when beaten just under two lengths.
Before that first-up run of the autumn she was seventh to Bonaria in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington last Derby Day and then winner of the Group 3 Summoned stakes (1500m) at Sandown-Hillside on November 15 during the spring.
She has class but has had five runs at Caulfield for no wins, but two thirds, and six goes at the 1400m for just two thirds again.
Girl Guide meanwhile is a Craig Williams mount in barrier four, the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Churchill Downs five-year-old having run sixth in the Myer Classic before her first-up seven in the Bellmaine Stakes.
Rounding out the single figure Mannerism Stakes hopefuls are then Myer Classic winner Bonaria ($5.50) in barrier five with Dwayne Dunn to ride and Choose ($9) in barrier two.
The Pat Hyland-trained Redoute’s Choice six-year-old Bonaria is the class mare in the race thanks to her big spring win, and was a nice first-up second in the Bellmaine Stakes with improvement likely.
Choose meanwhile has won her past two on the trot to earn this class rise, Mark Zahra riding the Lee & Shannon Hope-trained Starcraft four-year-old from the good gate after guiding her to victory over 1420m at Flemington on January 31.
