Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) is one of eight races running at Warwick Farm this Saturday, in celebration of Group One racing returning to Sydney in the form of the Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m).
14 sprint-mile runners are set to tackle the $150,000 race, four of which are single figure hopefuls in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Gerald Ryan’s Red Excitement is the hot favourite at $3.80, set to get an ideal start from barrier four with Brenton Avdulla to ride.
Red Excitement will be stepping up to Group type racing for the first time since he ran last in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) two years ago. The gelding’s form has improved tenfold since then however, winning his past five starts in a row.
The gelding enjoyed three consecutive handicap race victories this time last year but a leg injury ruled him out of racing for the rest the year. After ten months on the sidelines, he returned with a win in the Drummond Golf Handicap (1400m) on December 20 before taking out the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m) the following month. His winning streak has yet to let up and punters are getting behind him to win the 2015 Liverpool City Cup.
However Red Excitement faces some tough competition from his 13 rivals, especially the three other single figure hopefuls.
- #3 Pornichet ($5) – Gai Waterhouse’s four-year-old horse has yet to win over either the track or distance of the Liverpool City Cup but did win the Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1500m) back in November. Pornichet will enjoy a jump from midfield with Tommy Berry to ride.
- #10 Territory ($7.50) – The Jarrod Austin-trained gelding will have to overcome a wide start from barrier 12 but that hadn’t stopped the bookmakers from pushing Territory to the top of the betting. The seven-year-old has finished third in all three of his starts this campaign, including the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m), but has failed to break through to the winner’s circle.
- #11 Thump ($7.50) – is one of two horses saddled by Kris Lees in the race, set to jump from barrier 10 with Tye Angland to ride. The four-year-old mare was a surprising winner of the Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) two weeks ago and will carry 55kg, which is four kilos less than top weighter Hot Snitzel.
