2015 Guy Walter Stakes Betting Update

16 high-class mares are set to tackle the Group 3 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm this Saturday after Thump was scratched due to drawing the outside gate.

The betting market for the race remains fairly open at Ladbrokes.com.au with just three runners offering single figure odds.

One of two horses saddled by Gai Waterhouse in the Guy Walter Stakes, Cosmic Endeavour is the $4.80 favourite although market mover Arabian Gold isn’t far behind at $5.

Cosmic Endeavour has won six of her 14 career starts and all three of her starts over 1400m. The mare had a long but rewarding campaign last year, running straight through the autumn-winter and placing in seven of her nine starts.

After winning the Group 3 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) and placing in the Group 3 Darley Crown (1300m), Waterhouse decided to send the mare north to Brisbane for the winter. She confidently won the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m).

The mare enjoyed a lengthy seven month spell, resuming in the Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) two weeks ago in which she boxed on well enough for fourth but was let down by her 60kg weight allocation.

David Vandyke’s Arabian Gold is the 2015 Guy Walter Stakes market mover after her price shortened from $6 to $5 overnight.

The four-year-old grey mare has finished first two in four of her five past starts, which includes winning the Group 2 Gold The Roses Stakes (2000m) and Group 3 Golden Pendant (1400m) as well as running second to Tinto in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m).

Arabian Gold was last seen running second last in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) in which the mare was found wanting and didn’t enjoy the firm track. She looks in for a good preparation after winning a barrier trial over 1200 metres on February 10 and will enjoy a jump from barrier five with champion hoop Kerrin McEvoy.

The final single figure hopeful for the Guy Walter Stakes is Mahara ($9.50). The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained five-year-old has won her two starts over the trip, including the Group 3 Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes on November 4.

With so few single figure hopefuls, punters have a better chance at backing the 2015 Guy Walter Stakes winner at lucrative odds. Suitable betting prospects include Group One winner Tinto ($19), resuming star mare Dear Demi ($11), Triscay Stakes runner-ups Danesiri ($18) and My Sabeel ($13), and Tarloshan ($14) who has won her five starts over the trip.
