Waterhouse Pair Draw Well in 2015 Guy Walter Stakes

The Group 3 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) is one of eight races running at Warwick Farm this Saturday, attracting a top-notch field of 16 mares.

While 17 mares accepted for the race on Wednesday morning, the Kris Lees-trained Thump was quickly scratched in favour of the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) after she drew the outside gate. The trainer will still be represented in the race by Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) runner Hera, who will jump from barrier 11 with Tye Angland.

Gai Waterhouse’s duo Diamond Drille and Cosmic Endeavour have both drawn ideally in barriers four and six, respectively.

Five-year-old Diamond Drille won the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) last April but has finished outside the placings in all four of her subsequent starts despite inside jumps. The mare resumed in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on February 14 and despite finishing midfield in eighth place, she was just three lengths behind winner Contributer. Hugh Bowman will ride the mare for the first time.

Four-year-old Cosmic Endeavour had a successful autumn-winter last year. After winning the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) and placing in the Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Darley Crown (1300m) in April and early May, the mare travelled to Brisbane for the winter where she won both the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m).

The mare resumed in the Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) two weeks ago, finishing just one length off winner Thump in fourth place.

The 2015 Guy Walter Stakes will also see the return of Dear Demi, who had her spring campaign cut short after an elevated temperature. However it was before the mare won the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) and ran second in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m).

Clarry Conners’ mare will jump from barrier eight with Jim Cassidy to ride.

Rex Lipp’s Tinto will race out of Queensland for the first time after winning the Magic Millions Stayers Cup (1800m) on January 10. The four-year-old will start one gate out from Dear Demi in barrier nine with Timothy Bell to ride.

Other notable runners set to tackle the 2015 Guy Walter Stakes include Chris Waller’s Arinosa, who will enjoy the inside jump from barrier one with Brenton Avdulla, dual Group One runner Solicit, Group 3 Angst Stakes (1600m) winner Neena Rock in barrier two, Triscay Stakes runner-ups Danesiri and My Sabeel.

All in all the Guy Walter Stakes is set to be a classy and competitive mare’s race this Saturday.
