2015 Surround Stakes Final Field & Barrier Draw

12 classy three-year-old fillies are set to battle it out at Warwick Farm this Saturday in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m).

More than half of the field is coming via the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m), which ran at Randwick two weeks ago, which means it’ll be a nice little re-match of the surprising race.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Adrift was the upset winner of the race with a starting price of $41, tacking 1200 metres for the first time. The filly coursed three wide at the start but was only just off the speed. She made her way up to the front one by one and went out four wide on the rise. She kept on coming on the line and stayed on strongly to win three-quarters of a length from First Seal with Slightly Sweet a head away in third.

Adrift will return to Warwick Farm on Saturday where the filly won a Benchmark 62 over a mile back in November and she will enjoy a jump from midfield with Tye Angland to ride.

Light Fingers Stakes runner-up First Seal will enjoy the step up in distance since she won the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) on September 20. The John Thompson-trained filly will start in the next gate out from Adrift in barrier seven with Blake Shinn as jockey while Slightly Sweet will enjoy a start from barrier three with Kathy O’Hara.

Chris Waller is set to saddle a three-pronged attack in the 2015 Surround Stakes after accepting with Wine Tales, Amicus, and Winx.

It will be the first start for Wine Tales, who was last seen running second in the Listed Twilight Glow Stakes (1400m) back in November. Waller has yet to choose a jockey to partner the filly but she’ll enjoy the inside jump from barrier one.

Both Amicus and Winx will need to prove themselves in Saturday’s race after they delivered disappointing runs in the Light Fingers Stakes. Amicus is a Group One winner after taking out the Thousand Guineas (1600m) at the end of spring however she couldn’t get into her first-up race at any stage.

Winx was well-tipped to run well in the Light Fingers considering the filly finished strongly over the distance back in the spring, winning the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m). However she was slow away and ten lengths behind the leaders just before the straight before taking the inside run in the wrong part of the track. Ultimately she was just three lengths behind winner Adrift in seventh place in what was a forgivable run.

The stable mates will start the Surround Stakes in neighbouring barriers – eight and nine.
