2015 Chipping Norton Stakes – Contributer in Barrier 4

The Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) is the feature race running at Warwick Farm this Saturday, with all but one of the 16 nominated horses accepting for the race this morning – almost double the amount of runners in last year’s edition.

Premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller intends to dominate the race in his bid for an unprecedented five straight win after paying up for eight of his nine nominated horses.

Beaten Up will remain in Melbourne and while Boban and Weary were late entries for the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield they both remain in contention for the 2015 Chipping Norton Stakes.

Waller’s charge is spread out across the entire race field with Foreteller set to jump from the inside gate and He’s Your Man having to overcome a start from the widest gate.

Five-year-old gelding Boban is the defending champion of the Chipping Norton and will jump from barrier eight with Glyn Schofield as jockey as he bids to hold on to his title for another year. Last year the pair jumped from barrier four (of eight).

Not only is Boban hoping to defend his Chipping Norton title this Saturday, the gelding will also set out to break his drought considering he hasn’t won, let alone placed, in any of his nine subsequent starts.

Weary is Waller’s most in-form contender after winning the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) first-up on January 31 before holding onto third place in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) two weeks ago. The grey will jump from barrier ten with Tommy Berry to ride.

The 2015 Chipping Norton Stakes is set to be an Apollo Stakes rematch as 11 of the 15 runners are coming via the February 14 race, including winner Contributer and runner-up Ninth Legion.

John O’Shea’s Contributer confidently won the race first-up on just his third start in Australia and is set to jump from barrier four on Saturday, which is the most successful Chipping Norton gate, bringing home seven winners since 1983.

Team Hawkes’ Ninth Legion won the Listed Carrington Stakes (1400m) on January 24 before running a strong second in the Apollo Stakes. The gelding has drawn wide in barrier 12, which has never brought home a winner to date.

As the race is a standard weight-for-age, just three runners will carry less than 59kg – Hartnell, Silent Achiever, and Lucia Valentina.

Four-year-old gelding Hartnell will be making his first start in Australia after a successful career in the UK and is set to jump from barrier 14 while top-class mare Lucia Valentina will jump from barrier 11 with Hugh Bowman to ride.

Roger James’ Silent Achiever is the highest-rated runner after winning three consecutive Group One races last autumn, including the Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and The BMW (2400m).

The six-year-old gelding hasn’t run over a mile since running fourth in the 2013 edition of the Chipping Norton Stakes but will get a great start from barrier three with champion hoop Kerrin McEvoy to ride.
