Lee & Shannon Hope’s last start Kevin Hayes Stakes winner Sabatini is one of the headline final acceptors for the Angus Armanasco Stakes 2015 field in Melbourne on Saturday.
Set to run as Caulfield Race 3 at 2:40pm (AEDT) on Blue Diamond Stakes Day, this year’s $200,000 Polytrack Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) features a field of 11 three-year-old fillies.
Drawn ideally on the rails with gate one is the Seymour-based daughter of Street Cry Sabatini who is fresh off a first-up victory in the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) at the track a fortnight ago.
She had the inside alley that day with Nicholas Hall aboard for the three-quarter length victory she is out to repeat this weekend with the same hoop and barrier.
Winner also of the Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield to give her two wins from four starts at the track back in August, Sabatini has Group 1 form too when under a length away third to Amicus in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) last October.
Also coming off a gun run in the Kevin Hayes Stakes is the Robert Smerdon-trained Turffontein filly Fontein Ruby who ran third in the race in her first run since failing to beat home a single rival when 12th to Set Square in the Group 2 Crown Oaks (2500m) during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
She won back-to-back features last October taking out the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington and the Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m), and is after her first win since.
Under the set weights plus penalties conditions however, she will carry the 58.5kg top weight with Mark Zahra aboard in barrier six giving away up to three and a half kilos to some of her rivals.
Along with Sabatini there are three other last start winners in this year’s Angus Armanasco Stakes field including the flying Kris Lees-trained Marple Miss.
Drawn in gate five with Chad Schofield booked for the ride, the Not A Single Doubt filly has won her past three on the trot in Sydney and is after a successful Melbourne debut here.
She’s four from seven overall but is yet to step up to black type company or run outside of Sydney.
The other last start winners in the race are then the Mick Price-trained duo of Samartested and Bottle Of Smoke drawn in barriers eight and four respectively.
Dwayne Dunn’s mount Samartested won over 1300m at Morphettville Parks on February 7 and makes her black type debut here looking for a fourth win at start number seven.
Her stablemate keeps Damien Oliver in the saddle after the two combined to win over 1200m at Mornington a fortnight back, Northern Meteor filly Bottle Of Smoke having won her only other start so far last September.
Other notable Angus Armanasco Stakes chances this weekend include the Peter Moody-trained Flight Stakes third placed Thinking Of You and Robbie Griffiths’ Mossman filly Mossbeat.
