Protectionist Tops 2015 Sydney Cup Weights

Kris Lees’ German import and reigning Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist heads the Sydney Cup 2015 weights for this year’s The Championship’s staying showdown.

There are officially 91 horses nominated for the 150th edition of the $1.6 million Group 1 Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m), the two mile classic heading the racing at Royal Randwick on Saturday April 11 – the second day of the coveted The Championships.

On Monday Sydney Cup weights were released by Racing NSW, Protectionist allocated the 58kg top weight.

  • Protectionist is the 58kg top weight and early favourite
  • Mourayan (2013) was the last Sydney Cup winner to carry 58kg to victory
  • Red Cadeaux ( and Dominant (56.5kg) are the next heaviest weighted
  • Rising Romance (53.5kg) is the heaviest weighted mare
  • Who Shot Thebarman ($8) and Red Cadeaux ($10) follow Protectionist in Sydney Cup betting

The five-year-old Monsun stallion travelled down under during the spring on the back of a Group 2 Prix Kergorlay win over 3000m in France, and enjoyed a barnstorming four length victory two runs into his Australian campaign in the ‘race that stops a nation’.

Still prepared by his German trainer Andreas Wohler before his transfer to Lees’ care, the Australian Bloodstock-owned galloper beat home British veteran Red Cadeaux and the Chris Waller-trained Kiwi expat Who Shot Thebarman in the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m).

He’s now leading futures Sydney Cup odds at at $5 to complete the Melbourne Cup – Sydney Cup double despite his 58kg top weight.

The only other horse to carry more than 58kg to a Sydney Cup win since 1978 meanwhile was My Good Man with 60kg back in 1978.

Also featured in the Sydney Cup nominations are triple Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux and Waller’s third placed Who Shot Thebarman who sit third and second respectively in the early Sydney Cup betting markets paying $8 and $10 to win.

The Ed Dunlop-trained nine-year-old Red Cadeaux could become the first European raider to make an appearance during a Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival if he travels over this season and is allocated 56.5kg, a two kilo weight turnaround on Protectionist from their Melbourne Cup encounter.

Who Shot Thebarman meanwhile carried 55kg in the Melbourne Cup but goes down to just 54.5kg for the Sydney Cup where Waller will be after his first win since Stand To Gain in 2011.

Waller’s 2014 Auckland Cup winner raced in last year’s Sydney Cup in his opening run down under carrying 56kg to a disappointing 9th behind the Gai Waterhouse-trained The Offer and so gets a half kilo increase, 2.5kg above the limit weight, on last year.

Equal second top weight with Red Cadeaux, last seen running sixth to Flintshire in the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase in mid-December, meanwhile is another international Dominant (56.5kg) who finished just over half a length in front of Red Cadeaux in the Vase.

The Cacique seven-year-old is prepared in Hong Kong by John Moore and will stay with Moore for the autumn before staying on in Australia with a local trainer still to be decided for the entire, and pays $13 in the Sydney Cup markets.

The heaviest weighted mare for this year’s Sydney Cup clash meanwhile is the Donna Logan-trained New Zealander Rising Romance with 53.5kg who sits fourth on the ballot.

Winner of last year’s Australian Oaks over the mile and a half at Randwick, the Ekraar four-year-old was also competitive in the spring running second to the ill-fated Admire Rakti in the Caulfield Cup.

She was last seen winning first-up back home at Ellerslie in a 1500m handicap with 57.5kg and pays $13 to become the first mare since the John O’Shea-trained Jessicabeel in 2010 to win the Sydney Cup.

The other heaviest weighted Sydney Cup hopes this year are Waller’s Doomben Cup Beaten Up (55kg), his stablemate Junoob (54.5kg) and the Robert Hickmott-trained 2012 Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon (54.5kg).

Of those Beaten Up is the best fancied in the early markets at $13 with the other notable hope at just $11 being the Godolphin-owned Hartnell who is on just 52kg making him an excellent light weight chance.

Authorized four-year-old Hartnell is a British import yet to race down under but has Group 3 winning form back in England and has been impressing in recent Sydney trials.
