2015 Lord Reims Stakes Nominations Feature Adelaide Cup Hopes

A field of potential Adelaide Cup runners will face off at Morphettville Racecourse in this Saturday’s Lord Reims Stakes 2015 with nominations for the latter attracting 16 early entries.

The headline race in South Australia this weekend, the $115,000 Group 3 James Boags Premium Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) serves as the traditional lead-up to the lucrative $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) back at the track on March 9.

Early Adelaide Cup odds at bookmakers around the country are led by the Darren Weir-trained stablemates Akzar and Taiyoo.

Veteran Selkirk eight-year-old Akzar was last seen running a brave fifth to last year’s upset The Goodwood winner Smokin’ Joey at Caulfield when beaten only a length in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) on February 14.

He has winning form up to 3000m at Moonee Valley however and was most recently seen in the winner’s stall for the Warrnambool Cup that he won by six lengths last May.

Stablemate Taiyoo is hot on Akzar’s heels in futures Adelaide Cup betting with the Ballarat-based Weir naming the Group 2 as a potential target after the five-year-olds’ win in the Listed Torney Night Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley last Friday evening.

Haradasun gelding Taiyoo has won his past four on the trot between 2000m and 2500m around the Melbourne tracks and, if the timing works out, will contest the Adelaide Cup looking for a big interstate pay day.

Weir has a total of three Lord Reims Stakes nominees with his third being Zanteco, the Zabeel six-year-old last seen running third to The Ruffian in a Benchmark 78 over 2100m at Sandown-Lakeside on February 18.

The next best fancied in the early Adelaide Cup markets nominated for Saturday’s lead-up at a quote of around $13 is then the Tony McEvoy-trained Lucky Lucky Lucky.

A five-year-old Lucky Owners gelding the galloper won the Rain Lover Stakes at Morphettville Parks over 1950m last month before his second to Éclair Samba at Adelaide’s premier track in the Listed Birthday Cup (2032m) when beaten a half-length a fortnight ago.

The Phillip Stokes-trained Birthday Cup winning Éclair Samba is also nominated for a Lord Reims Stakes rematch this weekend, the Ekraar gelding third to Lucky Lucky Lukcy in the Rain Lover before turning the tables last time out.

Other notable Adelaide Cup entries in the Lord Reims Stakes nominations include the Archie Alexander-trained Sandown Cup winner Renew, Richard Laming’s progressive five-year-old Refectory, and last start Morphettville winner over 2600m Too Cool To Fool for Leon MacDonald & Andrew Gluyas.
