Lankan Rupee Displays Dominance in Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Win

The world’s equal leading sprinter Lankan Rupee has returned to racing in the best way possible this afternoon; posting a fifth victory at the highest level in the featured Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) down the famous Flemington straight.

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Craig Newitt settled the Redoute’s Choice gelding off the pace of early leader Fab Fevola, who led from three-year-old Brazen Beau and Deep Field.

Continuing to steadily build in pace, Lankan Rupee exploded into gear with 300m to race and comfortably took up the lead; pulling more than three lengths clear when hitting the line ahead of Brazen Beau and Deep Field.

Trainer Mick Price was thrilled with Lankan Rupee’s success in the 2015 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, and praised jockey Craig Newitt for a perfectly-timed ride for victory.

“It was a beautiful ride – Froggy (Newitt) wanted to tag Deep Field like that if he could have and it worked out really well for him,” Price said after the race.

“Just glad to see the horse do something really well, so off to the Newmarket and the T.J. Smith and work it out from there.

“I thought Brazen Beau might have been the blow-out horse and I thought we had the race worked out OK, but sometimes it’s not just a two horse race.”

Lankan Rupee won the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) most notably over the Spring Carnival, but was unable to match the late pace of Terravista and Chautauqua when third in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) on November 8th.

“The race was run properly and truly and the best horse on the day won and it was great to watch.

“We’ve learnt through a couple of those races where the sectionals weren’t too good for us,” Price added.

“When you’re tackling Terravista and Chautauqua; to be the bunny for those horses is not very good so I’ve always got that in the back of my mind and we’ll see how the Newmarket is run and take them on.”

Lankan Rupee will next contest the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 14th ahead of the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Day 1 of The Championships. is currently offering the best odds on all major sprints through the 2015 Autumn Racing Carnival!
