Golden Slipper Favouritism Likely for Silver Slipper Winner Headwater

Talented two-year-old Headwater is almost certainly favourite for the 2015 Golden Slipper after leading from start to finish to comfortably win the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon.

Jumping from the gates in an even line with all of his rivals, Headwater immediately took up the pace at the fore of the field, pushing clear of Paceman and Voilier and setting a quick tempo.

Continuing to build in momentum rounding the bend and arriving on the final straight, the Exceed And Excel colt comfortably jogged clear of his closest rivals, extending impressively to hit the line three lengths in the clear of Voilier; Queensland raider Mishani Honcho running on for third.

Co-trainer Michael Hawkes was on hand to witness Headwater’s impressive win in the 2015 Silver Slipper Stakes, revealing the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) on March 7th may still figure ahead of his 2015 Golden Slipper berth.

“He really put pay to them,” Hawkes said.

“He flew the machines which was great and ideally leading was probably the last option but after he began so well Blake just rated him.

“We’re four weeks away and obviously with that win at Moonee Valley and he has a little bit of a break and freshen-up and to come back off that.

“He’s settled in beautifully but he’s got a long way to go yet. He beat what he had to today but the Slipper’s four weeks away and we’re just taking it one step at a time.

“We were always worried about today and how he’ll pull up, but he came through with ease and he could end up here in two week, or could have a trial and go to the Slipper.”

Jockey Blake Shinn delivered a polished performance aboard Headwater in the 2015 Silver Slipper and was quick to lay all the praise on Team Hawkes and his talented partner.

“Obviously it was my first sit on him and you can’t just walk away with a smile, so very exciting,” Shinn said.

“Riding for the Hawkes heading towards the Slipper they know what it takes, he’s impeccably bred and it’s exciting going towards the richest two-year-old race of the year.”

Headwater will likely cut in to clear favouritism in 2015 Golden Slipper betting markets with Ladbrokes.com.au following this afternoon’s impressive performance.
