Wandjina Capable of CS Hayes Stakes Success

Classy three-year-old Wandjina posted several commendable results for trainer Gai Waterhouse over the 2014 Spring Carnival, and is reportedly in excellent condition ahead of Saturday’s Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) at Flemington.

Surprisingly securing just one race win over his ten competitive starts so far, Wandjina has not been seen at the races since placing tenth in the featured Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 25th.

Having taken particularly well to his return to work following a well-earned stint in the paddock, Racing Manager for Waterhouse Adrian Bott told TVN the team has been thrilled by the progression of the Snitzel colt and confirmed the 2015 Australian Guineas (1600m) on March 7th remains the major aim beyond his CS Hayes Stakes resumption.

“From day one of this prep he’s been in Melbourne and Gai is thrilled with the way he is going,” Bott said.

“His aim is definitely the Australian Guineas and he will use this race tomorrow as his final lead-up.

“He has come back much stronger and more mature and we’re expecting good things from him in the next few weeks.”

Running a forgettable seventh in the Listed NSW Thoroughbred Breeders’ Plate (100m) on debut in late 2013 before returning to the paddock, Wandjina comfortably won a minor sprinter at Warwick Farm upon resuming in 2014; progressing to fourth place finishes in each of the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) and Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) in autumn.

Placing a credible fourth in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) first-up in spring, the colt out of La Bamba was disappointing when beating just one runner home in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) on September 13th, but responded well in placing fourth in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) and an impressive third in the featured Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) a fortnight prior to the Cox Plate.

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best 2015 CS Hayes Stakes odds, for which Wandjina has cut from an opening quote of $13 to register at a still-generous $9 for success.
