CS Hayes Stakes a Major Test for Lucky Liberty

Yet to taste anything but success over his short but impressive racing career so far, trainer Henry Dwyer has revealed results of Saturday’s Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) will dictate whether or not Lucky Liberty will contest the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) come March 7th.

Caught wide in his most recent start; the Flemington Rose Garden BM78 (1420m) on January 31st, Lucky Liberty displayed a keen turn of foot late to hit the line a head in the clear of closest rival Siegestor; all but earning a step-up to black type company.

Allocated the somewhat wide and awkward barrier 12, Dwyer told Racing Ahead he has been pleased with Lucky Liberty’s 2015 CS Hayes Stakes lead-in, but is unsure he will match it with the likes of Disposition and Stratum Star.

“It’s hard to be confident when you draw barrier 12 against good horses,” Dwyer said.

“Last start we were confident drawing wide against decent Saturday-class three and four-year-olds, but we’re against Disposition and Stratum Star on Saturday.

“If they have a good run and we have a bad run, how can you possibly be confident?

“But in saying that, tomorrow is the day that he’s getting 2.5 kilos off them under set-weights-and-penalties conditions, whereas in the Guineas he’s going to be on level weights with them.

“If he can’t be really competitive tomorrow then you have to wonder whether you bother pushing ahead towards the Guineas.

“Probably having that week-and-a-half off we thought he may be back five or 10 per cent (fitness) for this race, but on the scales and in his work and his recovery from his work on Tuesday he’s pretty much spot on.”

Taking out the Mornington Car/Tyre Service Maiden (1200m) on debut at Mornington on December 28th, Lucky Liberty continued to impress when finding the line more than three lengths in the clear in the John Morrison BM64 (1200m) on January 15th, in what figured as his only other start prior to the Flemington Rose Garden.

Confirmed to be partnered by jockey Michelle Payne, Lucky Liberty is currently rated a $5.50 chance for success in 2015 CS Hayes Stakes betting markets with Ladbrokes.com.au.
