David Hayes & Tom Dabernig will look to increase their metropolitan wins in Melbourne this Saturday with Wawail running in the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m).
Wawail is one of 10 three-year-old fillies contesting the race at Flemington and is the $2.30 firm favourite in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au following her unbeaten streak of four wins.
Michael Walker will ride Wawail in The Vanity this Saturday as she looks to extend her winning streak to five. It will be the third consecutive ride on the filly for the trainer, who has a very high opinion of the horse.
Wawail won the Listed Dandenong Stakes (1400m) back in November and continued her winning form on returning in the Pack A Picnic Plate (1100m) at Flemington on Janaury 31. Although she has yet to be tested at Group level racing, Walker is confident Wawail has what it takes to impress at the highest level of racing.
“I’ve heard from all accounts that Set Square is flying, but in saying that so is my mare,” Walker told TVN.
“She has drawn nine, Set Square has drawn 10, but I’m not worried about just one horse. It’s a decent race.
“I know I’m riding a filly I believe that has not yet reached anywhere near her potential. I think she has Group 1 potential.
“I’m really looking forward to Saturday to see where she where she is in the pecking order.”
Walker also revealed that Wawail has improved since her win at Flemington at the end of last month and worked well with stable mates this week.
Ciaron Maher’s Set Square ($7.50) will take a big drop in distance when she lines up in the 2015 Vanity after winning the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) back in November. However all reports point towards the filly being in a great position ahead of the race.
