Voilier is one of eight two-year-olds running in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday but has become somewhat of the forgotten horse in the field.
The Gary Nickson-trained gelding will enjoy a jump from barrier three and is one of seven last start winners in the race.
Voilier made his debut in the Sire Custodians 2YO Plate (1100m) on December 6, hitting the line really well to draw away and win three and a half lengths clear of runner-up Zoutenant. The gelding got his first official trial of the season on February 9 after nine weeks in the spelling paddock. He was the fastest away and won by three-quarters of a length.
Despite all this, Voilier is a $12 shot in the Silver Slipper Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au and is hardly featured in any discussion surrounding the race.
Nickson believes his gelding can show punters and racing fans what they missed out on in Saturday’s race.
“He’s so laid back, he’s the best natured horse. You wouldn’t believe he was a two-year-old, you would think he’s a four or five-year-old that has had a half dozen preparations,” Nickson told TVN.
“He comes back underneath you, settles and relaxes and when you press the button he finds a few lengths.
“I’m glad there’s speed in the Silver Slipper, a couple will go hard and he’ll sit off them and bide him time until he has to go.”
Tye Angland returns to the saddle of Voilier in the 2015 Silver Slipper Stakes despite getting numerous offers to ride other horses.
“Tye said he had three or four offers, but when he came back he told me ‘I’ve decided what I’ll be doing – I’ll be riding your horse’,” Nickson recalled.
The Silver Slipper Stakes is considered the key lead-up race to the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on March 21. However wins the race this Saturday will be well-tipped to score the double in a month.
