The David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Lindsay Park-based filly Wawail has opened clear favourtie to win her first Group race in The Vanity 2015 at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday.
Jumping as Race 3 at 2:07pm (AEDT), this year’s $150,000 Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) features a field of 10 three-year-old fillies including the undefeated Wawail.
A nicely-bred daughter of Lonhro, her biggest success to date was in the Listed Twilight Glow Stakes (1400m) at Sandown-Hillside in mid-November during the spring.
She then returned to racing at Flemington on January 31 for a first-up win over 1100m that she’ll be out to repeat back up over more distance on the weekend in Group company.
The latest The Vanity odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have her at $2.30 to do so, Wawail the market mover in from $2.60 to retain her undefeated status at start number five.
Three of her rivals join her at single-figures to win including $4.80 second pick Maastricht with the rails run from barrier one.
The Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained daughter of Mastercraftsman has won two of her five starts and run second in a further two of those runs including behind Fontein Ruby in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington back in early October last year.
Her other second was also in black type company when two lengths off a fellow The Vanity hope this weekend Set Square in the Listed Ethereal Stakes (2000m) on Caulfield Cup Day.
Maastricht returned on February 6 at Canterbury in a Benchmark 74 over 1250m running fourth to Meursault but should be on the improve her over more distance against her own kind and dropping from 58kg to 54kg.
The other two under double figures are then Fenway ($7) and the aforementioned Ethereal Stakes winner Set Square ($7.50).
Fenway represents Seymour-based Lee & Shannon Hope, the High Chaparral filly after her first win since a successful debut at Bendigo over this 1400m distance back in October.
She was stepped up to a mile at Caulfield for a fourth to Bondeiger after that and then the 2000m when running a brave third to Thunder Lady in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes at Flemington on Derby Day at her latest start during the spring.
Set Square meanwhile carries the 56.5kg top weight under the set weights plus penalties conditions of The Vanity, the Ciaron Maher-trained Reset filly in gate 10.
She won three on the trot last campaign backing up from the Ethereal to win the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
She may find the 1400m a little sharp on Saturday but is too classy to ignore completely here in her opening autumn run.
Also of note at juicer odds for an upset The Vanity result are the Peter Moody-trained Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes placegetter Clover Lane ($10) in barrier three, her last start winning stablemate Sweet And Speedy ($12) and the third Moody representative in the race Miss Adele ($14).
