Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Two juveniles are currently installed as the co-favourites to win the first race at Flemington on Saturday with Blue Diamond hope Jameka and the unraced Vicious batting for Talindert Stakes 2015 favouritism.
A dozen two-year-olds face off in Flemington Race 1 at 12:55pm (AEDT) on Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Day, the $120,000 Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m) with four paying $5 or under to win.
At an equal $4.60 through Ladbrokes.com.au in the latest Talindert Stakes odds are Vicious for Team Hawkes in barrier nine and the Ciaron Maher-trained Jameka in gate five with Craig Williams to ride.
Damian Lane rides debutant Vicious when the highly regarded Nicconi colt runs for the first time on Saturday.
He’s yet to trial but the hype is already there and the markets reflect that.
Jameka meanwhile races for a shot at the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield Saturday week when the Myboycharlie filly has her third career start.
Her latest run was in the 2YO Inglis Premier at Sandown-Hillside on February 7 where she ran third to Stoker, an effort Maher hopes she improves on up over more distance this weekend and looking further ahead this Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.
There are then two other top fancies in Talindert Stakes betting that could firm enough to top the markets before jump time on Saturday with Stay With Me ($4.80) and Ragazzo Del Corsa ($5).
Street Cry filly Stay With Me is another unraced youngster with a strong pre-race following based on her impeccable breeding.
Her dam Miss Finland won the 2006 Golden Slipper, the $3.5 million classic now the world’s richest race for two-year-olds.
Trainers David Hayes & Tom Dabernig are hoping it is a case of like-mother-like-daughter with Stay With Me, Miss Finland also winning the Talindert early in her career.
The 2015 Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney on March 21 is also on the agenda for Stay With Me should she produce over the next few weeks including first-up in the Talindert Stakes.
Ragazzo Del Corsa meanwhile is one of six hopefuls in Saturday’s showdown, along with Jameka, heading towards the Blue Diamond Stakes.
Drawn well in barrier two for jockey James Winks the Stratum colt is already guaranteed a Blue Diamond run based on his $89,150 prize money earned to date following a win on January 10 over 1000m that he’ll be out to repeat in black type company this weekend.
At more generous odds but not without claims for an upset are then the likes of the Gai Waterhouse-trained Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes third placegetter Brooklyn ($10) with a wide barrier 11 draw to overcome, John O’Shea’s Medaglia D’Oro colt Bosnia ($13) also drawn awkwardly in gate 12 and the other horse guaranteed a Blue Diamond start if accepted in this field Take Pride ($15).
Take Pride looks well priced in the markets, the Murray Johnson-trained filly being a daughter of 2009 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Reward For Effort.
She won her opening two career starts, including over 1000m down the Flemington straight on New Year’s Day, but failed to impress behind Blue Diamond favourite Fontiton when 12th to her in the Preview on Australia Day.
