2015 Silver Slipper Stakes Betting Tips & Selections

Eight two-year-old horses will look to follow in Mossfun’s footsteps and win the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) on Saturday on their way to contesting the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on March 21.

Half the field is offering single figure odds in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au led by Godolphin filly Ottoman at $2.40.

The John O’Shea-trained filly is co-favourite in the Golden Slipper futures betting and will show her ability to win the $3.5 million race with her run on Saturday. Ottoman will have just her second start in the Silver Slipper Stakes after winning her debut in December.

With so many lightly-raced horses running against each other it can be hard to pick a clear winner; there’s an even greater chance of an unknown or forgotten runner causing an upset other the favourite. Check out our 2015 Silver Slipper race tips below to get an idea of which juvenile you should back.

1st

#3 Paceman ($4

Peter & Paul Snowden’s two-year-old colt made his debut in the Appin Plate (1100m) at Rosehill back in November by one length. Paceman was away well before settling into second position behind the leader. He travelled smoothly into the race four wide on the home turn before sprinting past his rivals. The colt has also impressed in two barrier trials since October. Paceman will enjoy a jump from barrier seven with Hugh Bowman, which is the same gate Mossfun won from last year, and is a winner over the track & distance.

2nd

#4 Voilier ($13)

The Gary Nickson-trained colt has become somewhat of the forgotten horse in the Silver Slipper Stakes field but Nickson is confident he can rectify this with a solid run. Voilier won the Sire Custodians 2YO Plate (1100m) on debut back in December by three and a half lengths. He was in the early speed battle but eased to take a trail. He then sat two lengths away on the bend before easing over heels three wide. The colt ranged up at the 300m mark and really hit the line well to draw away. Voilier has also won his two barrier trials, one with Blake Shinn and one with James McDonald. Tye Angland will ride the colt in the Silver Slipper Stakes and with these lucrative odds you can’t go past him.

3rd

#6 Ottoman ($2.40)

John O’Shea’s two-year-old filly has had just one start but sits atop the betting for both the Silver Slipper Stakes and Golden Slipper. Ottoman won the Tab Place Multi Plate (1100m) against a tough field at Rosehill on December 20. She jumped near the rear before getting checked early. She was still back fourth last with 500m to go and had 10 lengths to make up. The filly managed to get right to the outside and roared home to scored her brilliant debut. The only thing that could work against Ottoman in Saturday’s race is her wide start from the outside gate.
