Taiyoo Tops 2015 Torney Night Cup Field

Darren Weir’s flying five-year-old Taiyoo heads the field and weights for this Friday night’s Torney Night Cup 2015 under the lights at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne.

The Haradasun gelding has won five of his past six starts going back to December including his past three on the trot and will be after a fourth straight in the $150,000 Listed ADAPT Australia Torney Night Cup (2500m).

The handicap clash has attracted 11 exciting stayers, Taiyoo leading the Torney Night Cup weights with a hefty 60kg.

Brad Rawiller rides in the in-form galloper from barrier six with the top weight going up from 58.5kg last time out when Jye McNeill got the apprentice claim helping the horse to a three length victory over Crafty Cruiser in a 2400m Benchmark 96 handicap at Sandown-Hillside on February 7.

He’s up over 2500m for the first time but should handle the extra 100m no worries having won both his last starts over 2400m.

Following Taiyoo in the weights with 58.5kg in barrier four for jockey Chris Symons is then Archie Alexander’s 2015 Adelaide Cup-bound stayer Renew.

At the end of last prep the Dansili five-year-old won the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) in mid-November, a distance he’ll be back up to all going to plan in the $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville on March 9.

His resuming run on January 31 at Flemington however left punters cold when running a luckless 11th failing to beat home any other runners, beaten 10 lengths by the winner Averau in the Doriemus Handicap (2000m).

Peter Morgan & Craig Widdison’s ultra-consistent Doriemus Handicap winning mare Averau is also backing up in the Cup on Friday night.

The five-year-old daughter of Stratum has won four of her past five runs, finishing second in the other, and has drawn barrier eight for the weekend with Linda Meech to ride on 55.5kg.

Averau’s recent second place finish was behind Cadillac Mountain in the Listed Werribee Classic (2635m) in mid-December before her wins in the Listed Bagot Handicap (2800m) on New Year’s Day and then the January 31 success over 800m less.

She goes up from 54kg that run but could be hard to hold out over the 2500m at Moonee Valley having won both of her other starts at the track and distance.

The only other two horses weighted above the minimum are then the Dan O’Sullivan-trained Tuscan Fire (57kg) with the rails run from barrier one with Damien Oliver aboard and Tanby drawn at the opposite end of the field in 11.

Tuscan Fire has run top three in his past three runs including a third to Taiyoo last start with 59.5kg on his back, a run the proven two miler can improve on here with a bit of luck and the weight advantage for the rematch.

Tanby meanwhile was beaten nearly seven and a half lengths in that same lead-up race but is a three-time winner over the 2500m.

Other notable hopes then include Peter Moody’s Street Cry four-year-old Crime Fighter shooting for his third on the trot after wins at Morphettville Parks and Bendigo, and another last start winner Scelto jumping from nine for trainer Robbie Laing and coming off a Colac Cup victory over 2150m from just last Sunday.
