Set Square Leads The Vanity 2015 Field

Ciaron Maher’s Crown Oaks winner Set Square heads a nice line-up of fillies facing off in the 2015 The Vanity at Flemington Racecourse this weekend.

Saturday’s Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Day program features nine races including a trio of Group events, one of which is the $150,000 Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) running as Race 3 at 2:07pm (AEDT).

One of the likely favourites is Maher’s resuming Group 1 winner Set Square who has suffered an early blow drawing the outside barrier 10 draw for jockey Michelle Payne.

Payne replaces Hugh Bowman aboard the daughter of Reset whose latest run was a smart one and a half length effort over Thunder Lady in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington on November 6 during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

That was her third win on the trot and Saturday she’s looking for another Flemington win, this time running first-up over a distance probably short of her best.

One of her biggest threats has also drawn wide with the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Wawail in gate nine with Michael Walker to ride.

Undefeated Lonhro filly Wawail has won all four of her career starts to date including her only previous Flemington run last start on January 31 when Walker rode her to a one length victory over Clover Lane in the Pack a Picnic Plate (1100m).

She’s also got winning form over 1400m in black type company however when rounding out her spring preparation on November 15 at Sandown with a narrow win in the Listed Twilight Glow Stakes (1400m) where Walker also had the ride.

Three other three-year-old The Vanity fillies also come off a win with Primeiro who won on debut at Sale on February 8, Danny O’Brien’s progressive Pins filly Indulge after her third on the trot and the Peter Moody-trained Sweet And Speedy.

Street Cry filly Sweet And Speedy was Group 3 placed on a mud track in Adelaide last winter when third behind Moonovermanhattan before a length spell she returned form on January 26 at Sandown to win a Benchmark 70 over 1400m where she held off Mossbeat to win by a nose.

Moody has also accepted for two other hopefuls on Saturday with Sweet And Speedy joined in The Vanity field by Clover Lane and Miss Adele both drawn well in barriers three and two respectively.

O’Reilly filly Clover Lane ran third to Bring Me The Maid in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) in the wet back in August before an unplaced run when last to Panzer Division in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) finished off her prep.

Her returning run was a sixth over 1000m at Flemington before her second to The Vanity rival Wawail in an improved effort over 1100m at the end of last month.

Miss Adele meanwhile is a daughter of Bel Esprit who won back-to-back races in January before her third over 1200m at Sandown-Lakeside last time out on February 4.

Rounding out the field are then the Robbie Griffiths-trained Mossbeat who Sweet And Speedy beat over this distance on Australia Day, Hawkes Racing’s Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes winner Maastricht second-up for the season here and Fenway who was last seen running third in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at the track on Victoria Derby Day back in November.
