Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
The Listed Falvelon Quality (1200m) is the feature race running at Doomben Racecourse this Saturday with nine sprinters set to tackle the $100,000 feature race.
Robert Heathcote’s Excellantes is the headline runner and the seven-year-old gelding will enjoy an inside jump from barrier one with Damian Browne.
Excellantes enjoyed a successful debut season back in 2010-11, finishing in the first three in 10 of his 11 starts. More recently the gelding won the Listed Ascot Handicap (1200m) at Eagle Farm last winter and placed in a number of races including the Listed Chief De Beers (1110m).
The gelding has yet to score a win this campaign but did run second in two handicap races. Excellantes travelled to the Gold Coast on January 10 for the Magic Millions Sprint (1100m) but finished midfield to Straturbo.
Heathcote will also saddle Jopa in the 2015 Falvelon Quality, who’ll carry the minimum weight of 54kg as he jumps from barrier eight with Bridget Grylls.
The seven-year-old gelding has is in-form following four placed runs from his past five starts.
Sherrie Lawlor’s Architect is the only last start winner after netting a Benchmark 85 Handicap two weeks ago. The race was over the same track and distance as the Falvelon, which puts Architect in a great position heading into this Saturday’s race.
He will jump from barrier six with Jim Byrne to ride.
Jason McLachlan’s Interject finished third in a handicap race over 1200 metres at the Sunshine Coast last month and will need to overcome a wide start from the outside gate.
The John Thompson-trained Whittington is perhaps the most experienced runner on the field, running in a number of Group races in the past two years, including the Group 1 Galaxy (1100m) and Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) last year.
As a juvenile Whittington won the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) and ran second in the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m), earning him a spot in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) race in 2013. However he failed to make anything of the run, finishing 13th of 16 runners.
Whittington last won the Magic Millions Sprint (1100m) in 2014. The four-year-old horse will enjoy a jump from barrier three with Timothy Bell to ride on Saturday.
