The Hawkes Racing-trained Northern Meteor stallion Deep Field has been sitting as narrow favourite in the Ladbrokes.com.au markets for Saturday’s $500,000 Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m).

He could lose that top spot now to four-time Group 1 winner Lankan Rupee with Deep Field’s preferred hoop Dunn ruled out of the ride.

Dunn was aboard the undefeated four-year-old for his last start during the Melbourne Cup Carnival when on Victoria Derby Day, November 1, the classy galloper beat home Driefontein by a length in the Group 2 TAB.com.au Stakes (1200m).

The hoop was this week hit with a careless riding suspension for his performance n Top Me Up near the 800m in the Blue Diamond Prelude (Colts & Geldings) last Saturday at Caulfield that he appealed this morning.

But Team Hawkes are left with the task of finding a new rider for Deep Field’s Group 1 debut with Dunn’s eight-meeting ban, expiring at midnight on Saturday, upheld by Racing Victoria stewards.

Stewards took into account his good riding record and the low range grade of the incident but didn’t lift it in time for him to get the Group 1 ride on Saturday due to the episode occurring in a Group 3 race.

Over his five start career to date the untapped Deep Field has been ridden by Dunn three times, including in his opening two career victories the first a 10 length romp at Gosford followed by a four and a half length effort at Canterbury last winter.

The other two jockeys to have ridden the galloper, James McDonald and Brenton Avdulla, already have confirmed engagements at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney on Saturday preventing them from coming to Deep Field’s rescue.

Stay tuned to Races.com.au to see who will jump aboard Deep Field when he faces off against just five rivals in Saturday’s Black Caviar Lightning Stakes.
