Warwick Farm horseman David Pfieffer is looking...
Wangoom-based trainer Darren Weir is working towards a William Reid Stakes 2015 return next month with his Toorak Handicap winner Trust In A Gust delaying the retirement of the valuable stud prospect.
The top class sprinter is eyeing a first-up run in the $400,000 Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on March 21 this Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival not having raced since October 11 last year after injury bought his spring to a hault.
Keep The Faith stallion Trust In A Gust capped off a stellar Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival on that date winning his second Group 1 race on the trot.
Earlier on September 28 he survived a protest to keep his tough win when just fighting off Dissident to take out the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.
Back at the track 13 days later but up over a mile for the first time that prep, the four-year-old had a little extra to spare when three-quarters of a length in front of Speediness in another gutsy win this time in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m).
He was then tracking towards another run this time in the $200,000 Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day, October 25, when just 24 hours before the race he was injured.
Weir is hoping he can return to that same scintillating pre-injury form in the autumn starting in the William Reid Stakes where he’ll be out to become a triple Group 1 winner and add to his already imposing $1.1 million in career prize money.
The stable’s racing manager Jeremy Rogers confirmed to Racenet on Wednesday that despite interest from multiple studs, the William Reid Stakes and another campaign were definitely on the agenda.
“He’s down at the Warrnambool stable and he’s back in work,” he said.
“He’s as good as gold after the injury.
“He’ll probably have a jumpout a couple of weeks beforehand.”
The team is also looking at a Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival campaign with Trust In A Gust to target races including the $500,000 Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) on May 9, the $750,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) and the lucrative $2 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (13500m) all held at Doomben Racecourse this year.
