A leg injury has ruled the Anthony Cummings-trained As Needed out of a 2015 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival campaign this season but the gelding is set to return in the spring targeting the Epsom Handicap.
The Stratum five-year-old, a winner of four of his five starts to date, is only lightly raced for his age with leg problems plaguing his career.
He was being spruiked as a big carnival contender this time in however after his spring was restricted to just the one run.
Cummings had the untapped miler nominated for a number of the majors including the $3 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on April 4 and the $4 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on April 11 – both races run at Royal Randwick during The Championships.
The up-and-comer was also among the early entries for the $2.5 million Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on Doncaster Mile Day over less distance.
He’s officially been withdrawn from the all-in markets at Ladbrokes.com.au for all those lucrative races however with Cummings confirming he wouldn’t be racing anytime during the autumn due to a fractured hind leg.
“It’s frustrating,” Cummings told Racenet on Tuesday.
“We tried a few different things with him this time in but he’s ended up with a fracture in his hind leg, so will be in the paddock until June.
“This was a similar injury to last time, but on a different leg.”
Yet to be stepped up to black type company, As Needed was last seen winning a Benchmark 85 over 1300m at Randwick on August 9.
While missing the autumn is a major setback for the stable, Cummings remains confident the horse can make a full recovery and return for a Sydney Spring Racing Carnival bid.
He has him touted as a definite hope for the $500,000 Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on October 3 at the end of the year but said top priority was looking after the horse.
“He is an Epsom horse for sure, but first I just want to get him back to the track,” Cummings said.
“That will be the main aim. I just want to keep in one piece.”
