Honorius Tops 2015 Parramatta Cup Nominations

15 potential stayers are nominated for the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday, headlined by the David Payne-trained Honorius.

The five-year-old horse is searching for his first win since the Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m) back in October 2013. He has enjoyed nine starts since then but has run unplaced in all but one, the Octagonal Handicap (1400m) last May in which the horse finished second.

Honorius resumed in the Tab Rewards Handicap (1500m) at Rosehill on February 7 but didn’t come on, finishing tenth of 13 runners.

Chris Waller dominates the Parramatta Cup nominations with six nominations to his name – Black Jag, Diametric, Grand Marshal, Our Voodoo Prince, Permit, and Secessio.

Six-year-old gelding Black Jag has placed in two of his starts in the past month, including a Benchmark 95 over 2000m two weeks ago, Diametric got his taste of Group racing last autumn but finished end of the field in all three of his Group Three starts, Grand Marshal has finished first three in 12 of his 16 starts, Our Voodoo Prince ran but failed to place in the Group 1 Metropolitan (2400m) in the spring, and Secessio was third in the Listed Wyong Cup (2100m) in September.

Eight-year-old gelding Permit is perhaps Waller’s best chance at finding success in the 2015 Parramatta Cup after finishing runner-up in the Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) on January 24.

Permit found good speed early but allowed the leader to cross 200m out. He came off the leader’s heel in a bumping duel and was just two lengths off them on the turn. He battled away but couldn’t go with the winner, finishing over four lengths behind Danas Best.

Gai Waterhouse is set to deliver a potential dual-pronged attack on the race after nominating both Listed Premier Cup (1800m) winner Greatwood and Pajaro.

Other notable nominees include Jason Coyle’s Scream Machine and Bjorn Baker’s Burbero. The six-year-old gelding has finished first two in all five of his past starts.
