2015 Silver Slipper Stakes to Determine Voilier’s Autumn Path

Two-year-old gelding Voilier is set to have his first start since December in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill this Saturday, which is considered the ideal lead-up race to the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on March 21.

Trainer Gary Nickson will use the Silver Slipper Stakes to determine the gelding’s autumn path, in particular whether he’ll head towards the $3.5 million Golden Slipper or run elsewhere.

Voilier is not currently nominated for the Slipper, which means owner Steve Vardy will have to pay the $150,000 late entry fee if he runs well enough on Saturday for connections to tackle the world’s richest juvenile race.

“After Saturday we will know where we are going,” Nickson told Sky Racing.

“It is probably the race which determines whether he heads to the Slipper.

“If he goes well he will go to the Todman Stakes and the Slipper. The other option is the Pago Pago Stakes and the Sires’ Produce Stakes.”

Voiler is one of 10 two-year-olds nominated for the 2015 Silver Slipper Stakes, including the likes of Vancouver and Ottoman, who are early favourites to take out the 2015 Golden Slipper.

The gelding won his debut at Rosehill back in early December, hitting the line well to draw away and win three and a half lengths clear. After a nine week spell, Voilier had his first official trial of the year at Warwick Farm on February 9 with Tye Angland in the saddle for the second time.

“Tye Angland rode him in the trial and got off and said he would ride him in the Silver Slipper,” Nickson said.

“He had a few options and he chose him which I hope is a guide.

“He was a handful as a colt but as a gelding he is great to work with.

“He is a lovely, sensible horse. I’ve got seven by Beneteau and they are all big and strong.”

If Voilier is aimed towards the 2015 Golden Slipper following Saturday’s race, the gelding will get one more start before the feature race on March 21 in the Group 2 Todman Slipper Trial (1200m) on March 7.

If connections decide against running the Slipper, the gelding will run in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) on March 14 and the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 4.
