Promising David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained filly Wawail headlines a current list of 2015 The Vanity nominations for Flemington Racecourse this Saturday that have been extended by Racing Victoria.
Thirteen three-year-old fillies make up the early entries for the $150,000 Group 3 The Mittys Vanity (1400m) on Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Day this Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival, RV giving connections extra time until 10am (AEDT) on Tuesday to add their filly to the line-up.
Of the current nominees one that catches the eye is Lonhro filly Wawail who is nominated for just about every upcoming Group 1 race in both Melbourne and Sydney for the season.
She’s undefeated to date having won all four of her opening career starts including the Listed Twilight Glow Stakes (1400m) at Sandown in mid-November and her first-up run down the Flemington straight on January 31.
She won that 1100m sprint against her own kind by a length and is back over more distance this weekend looking to retain her undefeated status.
Possible targets in Melbourne next month for her include a run against the boys in the $500,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) on March 7, which she pays $21 through Ladbrokes.com.au to win, or being saved a week later for a shot at the season’s best sprinters in the $1 million Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m).
In Sydney she’s also got a host of possible The Championships targets on either April 4 or 11 including the iconic $3 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on the first day of the two-day carnival.
A host of Wawail’s possible The Vanity rivals also come off a win including the Danny O’Brien-trained Pins filly Indulge after her third on the trot after wins at Geelong and Sandown.
Other last start winners include the Clinton McDonald-trained daughter of Magic Albert Lady Einstein and the Peter Moody-trained Sweet And Speedy.
Street Cry filly Sweet And Speedy is yet to finish out of the money with two wins, a second and a third from four starts so far including her first-up victory over Mossbeat, Robbie Griffiths’ Mossman filly also nominated for The Vanity, over the 1400m at Sandown on Australia Day.
She’s also got Group 3 form having run third behind Moonovermanhattan in her previous run before that, the Darley National Stakes at Morphettville in Adelaide in the wet last May.
Also in the mix are then classy competitors Maastricht and Fenway.
The Hawkes Racing-trained Mastercraftsman filly Maastricht is a striking grey who has won twice from five starts as well as running two good seconds in black type company during the spring.
The first of those was behind Fontein Ruby in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on October 4 and then a fortnight later she ran second to Set Square in the Listed Ethereal Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield.
Fenway from the Seymour stables of Lee & Shannon Hope is also a Group placegetter, the daughter of High Chaparral having finished third to Thunder Lady in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Derby Day back on November 1.
See below for the current The Vanity 2015 nominations, staying tuned for late entries tomorrow and then the final field of acceptances on Wednesday.
