Lady Lakshmi Leads 2015 Vamos Stakes Field

Stephen Theodore’s Victorian visitor Lady Lakshmi leads a quality field of fillies and mares set to face off under the lights at Launceston Racecourse on Wednesday night during the latest Group-race Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival meeting.

Due to jump at 8:40pm (local time) as Launceston Race 5, this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Armidale Stud “Needs Further” Vamos Stakes (1400m) features a 14-starter field.

One of the top rated chances for the weight-for-age clash is Theordore’s four-year-old Lonhro mare Lady Lakshmi drawn well mid-field in barrier six for Daniel Stackhouse.

She debuted in Tasmanian at the start of the month when, on February 6, she finished five lengths away third behind Caulfield visitor I Love It in the Group 3 Bow Mistress Trophy (1200m).

Now she heads to the state’s other premier track and goes up to 1400m looking for her first win since a victory over that distance at Bendigo in late October last year.

She actually has a good record over 1400m with four wins, two seconds and a third from 10 starts so is in with a definite chance this week.

Also coming off a top three run in the traditional lead-up race the Bow Mistress is the local Spreyton-based Barry Campbell-trained Miss Middleton.

A three time winner from four runs at the track, the Churchill Downs mare is a Launceston specialist and should be improving back at her pet course after crossing nearly four lengths away second in the Bow Mistress at Hobart.

She’s drawn wide in barrier 13 however as are the likes of the John Keys-trained Chi Gong (barrier 14) and the Adam Trinder-trained Devonport Cup fourth placed At The Weekend (12) for jockey Daniel Ganderton.

There are two last start winners in the mix for this year’s Vamos Stakes with the Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained Goodfun Girl drawn on the rails for Clare Lindop and Downwind in eight for top Tassie hoop Anthony Darmanin.

Consistent Starcraft four-year-old Goodfun Girl is a six-time winner, including four from nine over 1400m, the most recent of those being back home in Adelaide on December 27.

Downwind meanwhile has had six starts for three minor placings but as yet no wins at the track, the Charge Forward four-year-old from the Runnymede stables of Charlie Goggin & Luella Meaburn coming off a win over Gee Gees Style in the Myer Fashion Class 4 Handicap (1100m) at Hobart from February 9.

Stablemate Snippetee Bee who ran fifth in the Bow Mistress last start also joins Downwind in Wednesday’s line-up from barrier 11 with Cory Parish riding.

Other notable Vamos Stakes hopefuls include the Robbie Griffiths-trained Bow Mistress sixth placed Nadeem Lass and Bill Ryan’s Longford-based Sh’Bourne Spirit who has won five of her nine Launceston starts.
