Catkins Leads 2015 Millie Fox Stakes Nominations

The third Group race running at Rosehill this Saturday is the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) which has seen its nominations extended until 11:00am Tuesday morning following after attracting just ten on Monday morning.

Despite the small number of nominations, the race is shaping up to be an exciting one with the likes of Catkins, Avoid Lightning, and Lilliburlero all declaring their interest.

The Chris Waller-trained Catkins resumed a week ago in the Group 2 Breeders Classic (1200m), successfully defending her title in the race. She was fast out to be in front after jumping from the second-widest gate before taking a trail. She got level with Lilliburlero 150 metres out and just put her nose down on the line to win.

The popular five-year-old grey mare has placed in 23 of her 28 career starts and enjoyed a minor placing in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at the end of the spring.

In true Waller fashion, the top Sydney trainer could be dually represented in the 2015 Millie Fox Stakes after also nominating Arinosa for the fillies and mares sprint-mile race.

Arinosa finished last in the Breeders Classic, five lengths behind her stable mate, and hasn’t placed in any of her past five runs. The seven-year-old mare last won the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) in October 2013.

After just being beaten on the line by Catkins in the Breeders Classic, Lilliburlero could get her chance at revenge after being nominated for the 2015 Millie Fox Stakes.

The David Payne-trained mare also enjoyed a minor placing in the Group 3 GH Mumm Stakes (1100m) at Flemington back in the spring.

Les Bridge’s Avoid Lightning has placed in all six of her past starts, including running third in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival. The six-year-old mare had just one start during the spring, winning the Group 3 Nivision (1200m) in October.

Other talented mares nominated for the 2015 Millie Fox Stakes include Listed Nudgee Fillies & Mares Handicap (1200m) runner-up Breakfast In Bed, Chintz who could back-up from the Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) last Saturday, and Peter Moody’s Plucky Belle.
