Thump Back to Best with 2015 Triscay Stakes Win

It was Calming Influence’s stable mate Champagne Cath that took the lead out the gates before the race favourite took over halfway through, sitting wide on the track.

The Kris Lees-trained Thump ($12) moved up the outside on the turn to home, while My Sabeel ($12) started to move up from the outside.

Four-year-old Thump kicked away from the pack, managing to hold onto the win a long neck from Danesiri ($26) despite getting tired with My Sabeel in third.

The four-year-old winning mare is back to her winning best following five unplaced runs.

It was the second win of the day for Lees, who noted Thump will only improve heading into the autumn under these conditions.

The mare hasn’t been seen since August due to a trip to stud to visit Fastnet Rock, however she returned to the track on Saturday after failing to fall pregnant.

“She’s been a long time off but she really suits this style of race,” he said following the race.

“The target all along was the Coolmore Classic and she looks to be on track.”

Lees revealed Thump will head towards the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill on March 14.

Tye Angland delivered the winning ride on the mare, admitting she was getting tired at the end but he wasn’t worried as the race was already over by that stage.

“I went out and walked the track earlier and it was quite obvious where the best part of the going way,” he said.

“She was [entitled to get tired late]. I thought we had a good enough run and I held it together up the rise. She showed a better turn of foot than I thought she had and that was the winning move.

“I probably should have held her up longer. She was getting tired late but the race was over.”
