Smokin’ Joey Wins 2015 Carlyon Cup

The first official meeting of the autumn carnival continued at Caulfield on Saturday with the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m).

11 horses tackled the mile, for which David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s Jacquinot Bay was the $3.90 favourite at The seven-year-old gelding was third at the 1000m but found a run on the inside, coming to the front in the straight.

Jacquinot Bay and Backstedt ($31) were contesting the lead down to the line but Wez Hunter’s Smokin’ Joey ($9) came up from the outside to just bob in front on the line. It was a photo finish between Smokin’ Joey and Jacquinot Bay with a very wide width distance between the two, with Backstedt half a length away in third.

It was a great, flying win for the seven-year-old gelding, considering he has a luckless campaign during the spring and summer, finishing outside the placings in all seven of his starts.

Hunter was understandably very happy with win from his honest horse. The trainer has been doing a great job in training the seven-year-old, scoring a much-deserved win.

“He really deserved this, his past half dozen runs have been really good but if hadn’t of win today I would have been really disappointed,” he said following the race.

“He had three weeks between runs, 1200m up to the mile, so I wanted to give him a good hit out on Tuesday morning. Chris came up and just cruised around, he was ready to go today.”

The trainer revealed Smokin’ Joey could return to Caulfield on February 28 to contest the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) but he will need to see how well the gelding pulls up after his win.

“We’ll just see, he might come back for the Futurity next time but we’ll just see how he comes through the run and go from there,” he said.

Chris Parnham rode Smokin’ Joey to just his seventh victory. The apprentice hoop really timed the run well, getting there late just in time.

“I wasn’t sure if I got there or not but it was a big thrill to win a Group race in Melbourne,” Parnham said.

“I sort of had to follow Damien Oliver on Big Memory into the race a bit, before making my own run on the corner, but he was too good for them in the end.”
