Adrift Scores Upset Victory in 2015 Light Fingers Stakes

The Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) was perhaps the race to watch at Royal Randwick on Saturday with the likes of Mossfun, First Seal, and Winx all resuming.

Yet no one expected the win to go to Gai Waterhouse’s Adrift, who opened the Ladbrokes.com.au betting market at odds of $81 before shortening to $41. It was just the three-year-old filly’s third start after winning for maiden back in November, however her debut over 1200 metres and at Randwick.

Chris Waller’s Winx was slowly away and got to the back of the field after jumping while the Lee Curtis-trained Press Report took the lead.

First Seal opened the betting as $3 favourite but saw his price firm out to $3.80 before the race. She began to wind up in the 400m straight however it was Adrift that stole the show, finishing three-quarters of a length clear of John Thompson’s filly with Slightly Sweet a further head away in third ($41). All in all it was a very shocking race.

Connections of fourth placer Peggy Jean served a minor protest against Slighty Sweet for third place but it was disregarded by stewards.

It’s safe to say that Adrift will be the one to watch this upcoming autumn carnival. Open your Ladbrokes.com.au online betting account today to receive a $250 bonus match on your first bet. Simply quote code: BETBONUS.
