Zahra Backs Fontiton for 2015 Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude

The Robert Smerdon-trained Fontiton is the short favourite to win the Group 2 Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday on her way to the main event in two weeks’ time but faces some tough competition from the likes of Secret Agenda and Heatherly.

After winning both her two starts since October, Fontiton is the $2.60 favourite in the betting ahead of her 13 rivals.

Despite the recent noise surrounding her challengers, jockey Mark Zahra is still confident Fontiton has what it takes to win the 2015 Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude.

“You can’t worry too much about the other chances,” Zahra told TVN.

“I’m just really confident in her and her ability and the fact that she has improved from her win the other day.”

Fontiton won the Inglis Banner (1000m) on debut back in October, displaying a brilliant bit of effort to win by six lengths. Three months later, the filly got her second start in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Fillies Preview (1000m) at Sandown on January 26.

The filly copped a check soon after the start before easing out three wide on the straightening. It took her the entire length of the straight to run Haybah down, just getting there on the line to win by a quarter of a length.

Fontiton is also the early $4.40 favourite to win the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 28.

She will be stuck in the awkward ninth gate when she jumps on Saturday but Zahra isn’t concerned it will reduce her chances at winning her third consecutive start.

“I don’t mind that she’s drawn nine – there’s a straight run at Caulfield until the turn,” he said.

“I don’t think she needs to lead to win, we saw her come from off the pace in the Preview. I’ll ride her where she is comfortable, but I don’t expect her to be too far away.

“I think she’ll go well.”
