The Gai Waterhouse-trained favourite Cosmic Endeavour looks vulnerable in Saturday’s Triscay Stakes 2015 at Randwick Racecourse with the classy mare to carry a hefty top weight.
Markets on Race 7 at 4:55pm (AEDT) in Sydney on the weekend, the $150,000 Group 3 Robrick Lodge Triscay Stakes (1200m), are firmly led by Waterhouse’s market mover at Ladbrokes.com.au Cosmic Endeavour in from $2.70 to $2.60 to win first-up.
The Northern Meteor mare is certainly all class as proven by her record last time in with four wins from her past five starts during the autumn – winter season of 2014.
She rounded out that prep with an elite level win in Brisbane’s Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) and races for the first time since that Eagle Farm success on June 21.
Cosmic Endeavour has had two excellent Sydney trials leading into the Triscay including a notable two and a half length victory at the Randwick track over 1200m on February 2.
Tommy Berry continues his association with the million dollar earner here, the favourite also boasting a good record of two wins from three starts when fresh.
Despite ticking so many boxes there is one glaring negative that is hard to go past – her big 60kg top weight.
She gives a minimum five kilos away to some classy contenders and so there could be value further down the Triscay Stakes odds this year.
#6 Mahara ($9)
A top talent at top odds, this Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Hussonet mare is first-up after a good spring campaign last time in. She won two on the trot to round out her prep including a Group 3 victory on Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington. She’s had one run for one win over Saturday’s distance and her Randwick record (2-1-1-0) is also good including her Group 3 Aspiration Quality victory over the mile here last autumn. Has won fresh so that’s a non-issue and gets in on the 54kg minimum.
#7 Calming Influence ($8)
This Chris Waller-trained Commands four-year-old may have the outside barrier 12 draw to overcome but she’s in flying form and boasts the fitness edge over plenty of her resuming rivals. Jason Collett has the ride on 54kg, which is a full three kilos less than she carried to victory at Flemington on New Year’s Day with ridden by D. Oliver. She’s yet to finish out of the money this summer, is a winner at the track and three times placed from five starts over the distance. Her Rosehill trial over 903m was also good earlier this month and has solid claims despite the class rise.
#1 Cosmic Endeavour ($2.60)
Can’t ignore the favourite completely with too many positives, the weight aside. She’s still the one to beat and obviously the class mare in the race so while she’s vulnerable she could prove even better than what we think and handle the kilos to win for the punters.
