Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The 2015 Blue Diamond Stakes bound fillies line up in Saturday’s Group 2 Prelude at Caulfield Racecourse ahead of the Group 1 in a fortnight, betting tips on the lead-up race that will determine who starts favourite on the 28th found below.
Leading the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au for the $200,000 Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude (Fillies) (1100m) at $2.60 is the Robert Smerdon-trained Fontiton.
The undefeated daughter of Turffontein is also narrow top fancy to win the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) back at the track at the end of the month, a position she’ll only hold onto if she can beat home her 13 rivals on Saturday.
She has the wider barrier nine draw than her main danger, Blue Diamond second pick Secret Agenda in barrier four for Saturday’s clash and paying $3.10 for the win.
They are the clear top two for the punters to choose between despite the big field, the only other single figure hopes being the Gai Waterhouse-trained Flamboyant Lass ($8) coming off a first-up Randwick win and Heatherly ($8) who is also not without her claims after a Moonee Valley win last Friday night.
So which filly will come away with the win and top spot in the Blue Diamond Stakes futures odds?
#1 Fontiton ($2.60)
While arguments, and valid ones, can be made for an upset we are going with our gut that says Fontiton is classy enough to defeat these rivals even from the wide draw. Mark Zahra stays on after success in her previous two runs including the Inglis Banner by six lengths on debut and the gutsy Blue Diamond Preview win on January 26. She’s had a couple of weeks between runs so should be ready to go out over the 1100m at her home track. Both her wins have been good, she’s facing a new level of competition in the highly-spruiked Secret Agenda who has the better starting gate, but there are 14 in the field and she might just be okay if class prevails.
#6 Secret Agenda ($3.10)
Price knows how to get a filly to win the Blue Diamond having done so three years back with Samaready (2012) and he believes he’s got the timing spot on again with this daughter of Not A Single Doubt who has won her only other start when a three and a half length winner over 1000m at Moonee Valley in December. Damien Oliver is back aboard for the Prelude where she’ll stake her Blue Diamond claims feeling fresh after her let-up. She’s not a type that needs a lot of work so goes into the race without an official trial but all reports from the stable are she’s in ace form and ready to take on the favourite from a lovely barrier four draw.
#8 Pursuits ($21)
With the top two in betting looking like the ones to back in the Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude quinella, punters looking for value will be attracted to this John O’Shea-trained Lonhro filly who represents global powerhouse Godolphin. She’s at juicy odds to break her maiden status at start number two and jumps from one inside the favourite, Craig Williams aboard in barrier eight, so can get a trial into the race. Debuted on Australia Day running two lengths away third in the Preview and will have improved since then.
