2015 Apollo Stakes Betting Tips – Waller the Man to Beat

Sydney’s leading trainer Chris Waller has set his stable up as the one to beat in the feature race in Sydney on Saturday with six horses, including the Races.com.au team’s tip to win, in the Apollo Stakes 2015.

Running as Randwick Race 6 at 4:15pm (AEDT) the $250,000 Group 2 Optus Apollo Stakes (1400m) features 14 hopefuls after the withdrawal of Red Excitement who runs in Melbourne on Saturday instead.

Leading the open Apollo Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au is one from Waller’s imposing contingent, French import Weary backed in from $6 to $5.50 to go back-to-back after his Group 2 Expressway Stakes win first-up.

His biggest dangers according to the bookies are then Kris Lees’ returning mare Lucia Valentina ($6), the nice Godolphin import Contributer ($6) and Waller’s Epsom Handicap champ He’s Your Man ($6.50).

With so many livewire chances in the exciting line-up, below are our tips for the trifecta that you can lock in now at Ladbrokes.com.au.

1st

#3 He’s Your Man ($6.50)

Waller has six to choose from and while this consistent Cape Cross six-year-old isn’t the best fancied of his two French imports in the race, we think he’s the one to beat. Had a stellar spring that included a Group 1 Epsom Handicap win over the Randwick mile and a last start second in Melbourne’s Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes over 2000m. He’s had one run over Saturday’s distance when second and is a winner at his only other start at the track in the Group 1. Trialled well behind the flying Red Excitement at the start of the month, gets a gate with barrier seven and should be right up there with Blake Shinn to ride him up on the speed.

2nd

#12 Silent Achiever ($10)

Returning Kiwi mare who has France’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in her sights at the end of the year. Four time Group 1 winner, two at home in NZ and two down under. The two Aussie elite levels were during the autumn in Sydney last season where she won the Ranvet Stakes – The BMW double. Has had three Randwick runs but is yet to finish in the money, however she’s a good each way chance for us here with a credible two seconds from five runs over the distance. She’ll be better later but the Cox Plate placegetter is classy and will take some beating.

3rd

#8 Contributer ($6)

It’s a tough field and there are livewire chances aplenty including this John O’Shea-trained European import who has had just the two runs down under. Wolferton Handicap winner at Ascot in the UK last June before a Group 3 Caulfield win over 2000m on debut in Australia. Then ran eighth in the Emirates when dropped down in distance on a too-firm track. He’s a flyer fresh with four wins from five runs when resuming and is a really good chance again here on the back of a winning 1000m Randwick trial from February 2 especially from the nice gate (six).
