Unsurprisingly one of Hawkes Racing’s star autumn prospects Chautauqua has opened as the odds-on favourite to win his resuming run in the 2015 Rubiton Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday.
Ten sprinters make up the field for this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Schweppes Rubiton Stakes (1100m), the weight-for-age feature to run as Race 6 at 4:35pm (AEDT) on the CF Orr Stakes Day program.
Dwayne Dunn has the ride on the horse to beat, Group 2 Gilgai Stakers winning Encosta De Lago gelding Chautauqua drawn well in barrier three.
Current Rubiton Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have the four-year-old as the firm $1.70 favourite Chautauqua boasting an imposing first-up record of two wins and a second from three attempts.
His last start also showed off his potential as an autumn Group 1 winner when Dunn guided him to a narrow second behind Terravista in the Darley Classic over 1200m at Flemington on November 8.
All four of his wins have been on Good tracks but he was also runner-up on Heavy going in the Gosford Guineas last April so continues to be well supported despite the 80% chance of storms at Caulfield on the weekend.
While the favourite is the class horse in the Rubiton Stakes field, some punters might find his price a little short with Chautauqua untested at Caulfield where he might struggle to be as commanding after runs down the Flemington straight.
Two of his rivals are also under double figures in Rubiton Stakes betting with market mover Atmospherical ($6) in from as long as $9.50 earlier in the week and Eloping ($6.50) who has also come right in from $9.
The David Pfieffer-trained Northern Meteor mare Atmospherical is undefeated over the Rubiton Stakes distance of 1100m and her rivals could find her too sharp on Saturday.
She’s a six-time winner from 10 starts overall, two from three first-up and comes off a winning Randwick trial over 838m from earlier in the month.
Eloping meanwhile is another big danger should she find the rails from her inside barrier one draw.
The Peter Morgan & Craig Widdison-trained Choisir filly is first-up here having last been seen running second to Onemorezeta in the Group 3 Red Roses Stakes (1100m) during the Melbourne Cup Carnival in November.
That was her second 1100m start for another second place finish, Eloping also well proven at Caulfield with two wins and a second from three starts.
Outside of the three top fancies the next best fancied are the Liam Birchley-trained Brisbane raider Missy Longstocking who has eased right out from $6.50 to $15 with the news of rain and Oakleigh Girl steady at around $16 in the markets.
Four-year-old Sequalo mare Missy Longstocking comes off a third in the Magic Millions Sprint (1100m) at the Gold Coast when only a half-length off the winner in her first run in 12 months.
Also from Queensland, Oakleigh Girl represents Eagle Farm trainer Danny Bougoure who is hoping she can win the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 28 as both of her parents have done before her.
The Snitzel filly hasn’t raced since April last year but the once very promising juvenile is ready for a return according to Bougoure.
