Punters Get Excited in 2015 Carlyon Cup Betting

The Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) is one of eight races running in support of the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield this Saturday, marking the official kick-off of the autumn carnival in Melbourne.

12 horses are set to tackle the mile in the $150,000 race, five of which are offering single figure odds in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au.

The Gerald Ryan-trained Red Excitement opened the betting as $2.40 favourite and has since his support drop to $2.30 following support from punters, making him the market mover of the race.

Red Excitement had just three starts in 2014 after suffering a leg injury after winning the Eatability Handicap (1600m) in February. The five-year-old gelding was forced to the sidelines to recuperate, returning to the track after ten months to win the Drummond Golf Handicap (1400m) on December 20.

The gelding got his first black-type race start in nearly two years in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m) on January 14, which he was able to win by a short half-head after just bobbing his head on the line.

Red Excitement will enjoy an inside jump from barrier two with Mark Zahra in the 2015 Carlyon Cup but faces some tough competition from the four other single figure hopefuls.

  • #8 Akzar ($7) – the betting for the Carlyon Cup isn’t even close at the moment, with second favourite Akzar all the way behind Red Excitement. Darren Weir’s eight-year-old gelding will enjoy the inside jump from barrier one as he vies to return to the winner’s circle for the first time since March last year. Akzar did finish runner-up over the mile at Flemington on January 6, sandwiched between two fifth place runs.
  • #4 Jacquinot Bay ($8.50) – One of two horses saddled by David Hayes & Tom Dabernig in the Carlyon Cup, Jacquinot Bay will jump from barrier three with Michael Walker. The seven-year-old gelding is in-form after winning his past three starts, including the Listed Lord Stakes (1600m) and the Summer Championship last Saturday. He is the only runners backing up between races.
  • #5 Spurtonic ($8.50)Gai Waterhouse’s Spurtonic won the $400,000 Magic Millions Cup (1400m) on January 10 before finishing last in the Listed Carrington Stakes (1400m) two weeks later. Both times he jumped from barrier ten but the gelding will enjoy a start from barrier eight on Saturday.
  • #2 Lidari ($9)Peter Moody’s six-year-old horse is the only single figure hopeful resuming in the Carlyon Cup. Lidari finished runner-up in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) during the spring, which earned him a place in the field for the Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m), however he didn’t last the trip. Will jump from barrier four with Luke Nolen.
