11 two-year-old horses are set to run in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) at Royal Randwick Racecourse on Saturday, more than a third of which are from breeding giant Godolphin.
Calaverite, Furnaces, Haptic, and Igraine are four of Godolphin’s best juveniles racing at the moment and will go head-to-head in the Lonhro Plate as they all bid for a shot at racing in the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) next month.
Godolphin’s head trainer John O’Shea has no qualms about racing the four best two-year-olds from his stables against each other, believing it’s the easiest way of seeing who will step up.
“It’s that time of year when they have to step up, earn the prize-money needed to get into the Slipper, so they are all out there having a shot at it,” O’Shea told Racing Network.
“Obviously there are some lovely young horses among them but there’s no time to hold them back now,” he added.
Furnaces is the $2.10 firm favourite in the Lonhro Plate betting at Ladbrokes.com.au and is also the highest-rated of the four in the Golden Slipper futures betting at $10.
The colt dominated his debut back in October, winning the Primo Moraitis Plate (1100m) by six and a half lengths. Furnaces was fast away to lead and kicked away under a hold at the 250 metre mark before absolutely bolting home for an easy win. He also impressed in a barrier trial on February 3, winning one and a half lengths clear.
Furnaces will jump from barrier four with new Godolphin number one jockey James McDonald.
Haptic made his debut in the Tab Place Multi Plate (1000m) on January 24, and was good enough to hold on by a shortening margin to win by half a length. The colt will jump from barrier two with Blake Shinn.
Calaverite won the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) on debut back in October ahead of stable mate Igraine and was set to run in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill at the end of last month before being scratched due to the rain-affected track.
The filly will have to overcome a jump from the widest gate on Saturday with Sam Clipperton to ride.
Godolphin’s fourth entry Igraine is sitting just shy of the single figures betting at $11. The filly has yet to win a race but has placed in her two starts, the Gimcrack and Widden Stakes.
Igraine will jump from barrier three with Christian Reith.
