The Robert Smerdon-trained Fontiton leads an exciting field of promising two-year-old fillies that will battle for Blue Diamond Stakes favouritism in Saturday’s Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude 2015 at Caulfield Racecourse.
In a precursor to the Grand Final $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) back at the track in a fortnight, this weekend’s CF Orr Stakes Day line-up includes two Prelude races for the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival’s premier juvenile’s race.
Fillies again dominate the early Blue Diamond Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au making the $200,000 Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude (Fillies) (1100m) the race to watch on Saturday.
The first four in futures Blue Diamond Stakes betting are all accepted for the BD Fillies Prelude with a total of 14 hopefuls facing off.
Undefeated Fontiton is the one to beat, the $4.40 Blue Diamond chance looking for her third win from as many starts.
On debut the daughter of Turffontein, drawn in barrier nine for Saturday, won by six lengths in the Inglis 2YO Banner at Moonee Valley last October.
She returned on Australia Day at Sandown then for a win in the Blue Diamond Fillies Preview and is out to do it again in the Prelude and cement her top spot in the markets for the upcoming elite level.
Her main danger is perceived to be Mick Price’s Not A Single Doubt filly Secret Agenda, a $4.80 chance for February 28.
On Saturday she too looks to retain an undefeated status after winning her first race on December 12 with a three and a half length victory over Haybah over 1000m at Moonee Valley.
She was impressive there and has drawn well in barrier four for the Prelude with Damien Oliver staying on.
The next best in Blue Diamond betting are then Heatherly ($9) and Flamboyant Lass ($11) who both get to stake their claims further on the weekend.
Matthew Ellerton & Simon Zahra’s Lonhro filly Heatherly jumps from barrier six with Damian Lane in the saddle following a successful debut with the same hoop on her back last Friday night at Moonee Valley defeating Reemah by one and three-quarter lengths over 1000m.
Flamboyant Lass is in double digits for jockey Glen Boss in 10 for the Fillies Prelude, the Gai Waterhouse-trained daughter of Stratum also coming off a win but at Randwick from January 10.
Other notable Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude runners include the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained duo of Air Apparent out wide in 12 looking to break her maiden status after back-to-back seconds to kick off her career last month and Hell Or Highwater who ran fourth to Thurlow on debut in the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes (1000m) in mid-November.
