Cosmic Endeavour Tops 2015 Triscay Stakes Field

Gai Waterhouse’s Group 1 winner Cosmic Endeavour returns to racing this Saturday in Sydney as the top-rated and weighted hope in the Triscay Stakes 2015 on Apollo Stakes Day at Royal Randwick.

The four-year-old daughter of Northern Meteor is one of a dozen mares making up the field for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Robrick Lodge Triscay Stakes (1200m), running as Randwick Race 7 at 4:55pm (AEDT).

She’s drawn wide in barrier nine for Tommy Berry who retains the ride after being aboard for three of her four most recent wins from last season including her breakthrough elite level victory in Brisbane during the winter.

After wins in the Inglis Guineas at Scone in May and the Group 2 Dane Ripper at Eagle Farm, Cosmic Endeavour scored a narrow Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) victory in Queensland on June 21.

She’s had two official trials since including a winning hit-out over 1200m at Randwick on February 2 where she beat Diamond Drille by two and a half lengths, impressing Berry ahead of her return in the Triscay.

The only thing working against Cosmic Endeavour, who has won two of her three previous first-up runs, is the hefty 60kg top weight she’ll carry.

Waterhouse has also accepted for Forever Loved who jumps from a better barrier, two, with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle.

The High Chaparral mare won the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) at Flemington in early October during the spring before two below par runs over a mile.

The most recent of those saw her outclassed at Flemington on Derby Day, November 1, where she failed to beat home any of her rivals running 16th to Bonaria in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m).

She’s been trialling well since however including a win over Big Memory over 1200m at Randwick where she resumes this weekend.

The only other mare in the Triscay Stakes field along with Cosmic Endeavour who carries more than the 54kg minimum is the Kris Lees-trained Thump with 55kg.

The Red Ransom four-year-old won the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm last March before a string of unplaced runs, including walking home over 42 lengths off the winner My Sabeel in the Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1300m) at Randwick in the mud last start in August.

The Heavy-rated track didn’t suit her that day and her two Newcastle trials over the break have been promising.

Of the other resuming runners some of the more notable include the O’Reilly mare Hera also representing the Newcastle-based Lees, Peter & Paul Snowden’s Group 3 winner from Melbourne Cup Day Mahara and Savabeel seven-year-old My Sabeel.

As with nearly every feature race in Sydney, the city’s top trainer Chris Waller has a strong contingent in the Triscay Stakes with three chances.

Waller saddles up outside chance Kristy Lee in gate five, Calming Influence in the outside draw and Champagne Cath in barrier 10.

Consistent Commands four-year-old Calming Influence has run top three in her past three runs over the summer including a victory on New Year’s Day at Flemington over 1400m.

Champagne Cath has had two runs this time in for two strong runs, the latest being a third to Endless Shadow when under a length off the winner in the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Handicap on January 10.
