2015 CF Orr Stakes Field – Dissident in Barrier 7

Autumn Racing officially kicks off at Caulfield on Saturday with the first Group One race of the year. The Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) is the feature of the nine-race meeting and has attracted a talented field of 15 sprint-mile runners.

Headlining the field is the Peter Moody-trained Dissident, who resumed two and a half weeks ago in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley. It was the horse’s first go-around on the tight circuit, and he just plugged home for third after finding himself pushed wide in the race. However a return to Caulfield over 1400 metres should prove more fortuitous for the four-year-old.

Dissident won the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) first-up during the spring over the same trip and track and also ran second in the Group 1 Rupert Clarke Charity Cup (1400m), missing out on victory by just a short half-head.

Ben Melham will ride the three-time Group One winner as the pair jump from barrier seven.

Australia Stakes winner Mourinho is also running in the 2015 CF Orr Stakes, which means it’ll be a re-match between first and third. The Peter Gelagotis-trained gelding was a shocking winner of the race, considering he’d never run over 1200 metres and was generally kept between 1600 metres and 2000 metres.

Yet Mourinho proved he was a versatile runner and will now run over 1400 metres for just the sixth time. The last time the gelding tackled the distance was in the Group 3 Tab Rewards Stakes (1400m) in March last year, where he finished runner-up to Mouro, who is also set to run on Saturday.

Mourinho will enjoy an ideal start from barrier three with Vlad Duric to ride.

There are also a number of classy horses resuming in the 2015 CF Orr Stakes, many of which were big players during the spring.

The Paul Beshara-trained Happy Trails enjoyed a second placing in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at the beginning of his campaign before finishing outside the placings in his next three starts. However he ended his season on a high note after taking out the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) just a short half-head in front of He’s Your Man.

The seven-year-old gelding will have to overcome a start from the second widest gate on Saturday but he proved he could do it last time out after winning the Mackinnon Stakes from barrier 12 (of 14).

Other horses resuming on Saturday include Henry Dwyer’s Sonntag, Star Rolling, Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) runner-up Entirely Platinum, and Spillway who will enjoy the inside jump from barrier one with Michael Walker.

Adam Durrant’s Real Love will have her first start outside of Perth after making the trek across the country. The four-year-old mare had a lucrative summer, winning both the Group 3 Queen’s Cup (2200m) and Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m).

Like Dissident, Petrology resumed three weeks earlier than many of his autumn rivals in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1300m), in which the colt finished second.

The David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained three-year-old won the Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) during the spring and will jump from barrier ten with Nicholas Hall to ride.
