2015 Autumn Stakes Field Features Hong Kong Captain

In a field lacking a true standout galloper, the Autumn Stakes 2015 at Caulfield on Saturday looks an open affair and features some promising types including Hong Kong Captain.

Due to run as CF Orr Stakes Day Race 7 at 5:15pm (AEDT), this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Hyland Race Colours Autumn Stakes (1400m) attracted a final field of 15 three-year-olds.

One of the least experienced but progressive of those is the rails-drawn Hong Kong Captain for David Hayes & Tom Daberning.

Michael Walker has the mount on the Host gelding who has won two of his three starts to date, Walker aboard for both victories.

Last time out on January 24 at Moonee Valley he defeated a similar class field in the lucrative VOBIS Gold Star over 1500m, and should be sharp dropping back to 1400m here.

Runner-up in the Gold Star, the Darren Weir-trained Domesday gelding Profit Share also runs in the Autumn Stakes this weekend looking to turn the tables on his last start conqueror.

After the Gold Star, where he finished a half-length off Hong Kong Captain, Profit Share won over 1300m at Sandown-Hillside in the William Hill Plate defeating stablemate Stratum Star by two lengths in a solid effort he’ll be out to repeat here.

Along with Hong Kong Captain, Hayes & Dabernig are also represented in the Autumn Stakes field this autumn by Firehouse Rock who drew well in gate three with Nicholas Hall booked for the ride.

First-up the Fastnet Rock colt ran fifth to Lucky Liberty over 1420m at Flemington in a Benchmark 78, his first start since finishing nine and a half lengths away 11th to Preferment in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) during the spring.

The other last start winner along with Profit Share and Hong Kong Captain is the John O’Shea-trained Sarajevo out wide in barrier 14 for Cox Plate winning hoop Chad Schofield.

Godolphin’s Lonhro colt ran sixth to Hallowed Crown in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) in mid-September before being turned out for a spell.

He won back-to-back Randwick trials in December and January before his first-up success at Rosehill in a Benchmark 72 over 1200m.

While that was a promising effort, Saturday will be Sarajevo’s maiden run outside of Sydney and he’ll need to handle the opposite way of running here.

Also coming off good lead-up runs are the likes of Not A Single Doubt gelding Affirmation for Adelaide’s Tony McEvoy in the outside barrier for his second-up run after a third to Java in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1300m) on Australia Day, the Peter Moody-trained Manfred Stakes fourth placegetter San Nicasio and recent Flemington winner Convincible for Cranbourne’s Dean Howard.

As for the resuming runners two of the most noteworthy are the Mark Kavanagh-trained Victoria Derby fifth placed Magicool in barrier four for Craig Williams and Danny O’Brien’s War Pass colt Bondeiger.

Last time out on November 1 Bondeiger came within a head of Preferment in the Victoria Derby and is eyeing a run in the $500,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 7.
