With eight feature races running at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday, many horses have been dually nominated across the CF Orr Stakes Day meeting.
Peter Morgan & Craig Widdison nominated their top filly Eloping for both the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) and Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) but have already opted to run the filly in the former race.
Even though she’ll have to take on the third-highest rated sprinter in the world, Chautauqua, in the Rubiton Stakes, the shorter trip and lighter weight really tipped the race in Eloping’s favour as far as Morgan is concerned.
Eloping would have carried the top weight of 58.5kg and run an extra 100 metres in the Kevin Hayes Stakes compared to the much lower 52.5kg in the Rubiton Stakes, which is the third lowest set weight apart from Tawteen (51kg) and Oakleigh Girl (52kg).
“She’s got 58.5 against the fillies over 1200, but I think the 1100 will suit her better with 52.5, so we’ve elected to go there,” Morgan told Racing Ahead.
The three-year-old filly has earned her connections just shy of $1 million in total prize money earnings after placing in nine of her 13 starts.
Eloping placed in four of her five starts during the spring, which included winning the Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m). The tough filly also managed to place in races such as the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) and Group 3 Gucci Stakes (1100m).
She is one of 15 horses nominated for the 2015 Rubiton Stakes, including Flamberge, Richie’s Vibe, Missy Longstocking, and of course Chautauqua.
The Team Hawkes-trained sprinter earned the title of third best sprinter in the world after winning the Gilgai Stakes by an impressive four lengths and finishing runner-up to Terravista in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) last spring.
The Rubiton Stakes is considered a lead-up race towards the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) on February 28, which Eloping will be aimed towards.
“(She’ll run) Saturday and then the Oakleigh Plate, that’s our plan at this stage and then after that I’m not sure,” Morgan added.
