Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
In another big feature race day for one of Tasmanian’s top sires Wordsmith, Geegees Goldengirl won another for her father saluting for the punters in the Strutt Stakes 2015 at Hobart Racecourse on Monday.
Just one race after John Luttrell’s Wordsmith filly Gee Gees Top Notch won the Elwick Stakes, Hobart Cup Day Race 7 saw three-year-old Geegees Goldengirl take out the $100,000 Listed PFD Food Services Strutt Stakes (2100m).
It was a magic result for connections and her Brighton-based trainer Stuart Gandy who was full of pre-race praise for his ace stallion Wordsmith.
“He’s just a fantastic sire Wordsmith,” he said.
“He’s at home and doesn’t know what’s going on but by Christ we’re glad to have him.”
Geegees Goldengirl ($3.90) was ridden by apprentice hoop Sigrid Carr and had a neck to spare on the line over the John Blacker-trained Thousand Guineas runner-up Shayana ($16.40) who again finished second best in a Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival feature.
In third over a length further away to round out this year’s Strutt Stakes trifecta was then the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Victorian visitor Marocan Diva ($6.60) in her Tasmanian debut.
“She deserved today, she deserved to win,” Gandy said.
“They ran home so quick. She just did a great job.
“Winning races like this for (owners) Paul and Elizabeth (Geard) means the world.”
With 600m to go the eventual winner was still caught up a little in traffic and young apprentice Carr thought she wasn’t going to get a crack at them at the top of the straight.
But in a run from the filly she described as tough, Carr was able to get through and hit the line first in Geegees Goldengirls’ second look at the distance.
“She was travelling so strong the whole race under good wraps,” Carr said.
“But at the top of the straight I thought ‘I’m not going to get a crack at them here’.
“She hit the line really well though.
“She was tough today, really tough.
“As much as it was tricky I think being held up for that little bit longer actually helped her.”
Three back Geegees Goldengirl ran a brave second to former ace juvenile Admiral in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m).
Then instead of the easier assignment in the Thousand Guineas, Gandy raced her in the Listed Hobart Guineas (2100m) where she ran under a half-length away third to Warrior Of Fire.
Improving on that run, the progressive filly proved she could handle the staying distance and rewarded the faith Gandy had in her to get the job done.
“Everything she’s done she’s done it on ability,” Gandy, who always said she wouldn’t be at her best until her three or even four-year-old season, said.
“She’s always raced against the best and she’s come out today and proved she’s well up to them.
“We missed the Thousand Guineas. We just thought she was too good to go to that grade of race and she’s proved us right.
“To be honest I thought the mile (1600m) might stretch her but she’s proved me wrong so that’s great.”
Gandy confirmed the Strutt Stakes winner Geegees Goldengirl would next run at Launceston on February 22 in the $100,000 Listed Tasmanian Oaks (2100m).
“We will go to the Oaks,” he said.
Carr confirmed she would be fighting to stay on the filly in the Tasmanian Oaks, and that the horse could stretch even further in distance if she learned to relax more in her runs.
The last filly to complete the Strutt Stakes – Tasmanian Oaks double was Causeway Queen (2008).
