Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
John Luttrell’s smart young filly Gee Gees Top Notch continued the ace start to her career on Monday with a tidy win in the 2015 Elwick Stakes on Hobart Cup Day.
Ridden by one of Tasmania’s top hoops Anthony Darmanin, the two-year-old daughter of Wordsmith posted her third career win at start number five and her first in black type company confirming her trainer’s high opinion of her.
“She went super,” the Brighton-based Luttrell told the media post-win.
Coming off a second at Launceston over 1100m three weeks ago, she relished going over the same distance but this time at Hobart Racecourse in the $100,000 Listed Motors Elwick Stakes (1100m).
In a weaving ride from Darmanin, who Luttrell was quick to credit, Gee Gees Top Notch threaded through the field in another typically tough performance.
“Brilliant ride by Darmanin,” Luttrell said.
“He had to work his way thorough.
“She’s real tough, like a colt really.
“I think she should have won five in a row.”
On the line Gee Gees Top Notch ($5.10) had three-quarters of a length to spare over the Shane Nichols-trained Band On The Run ($4.90) from Melbourne, the I Am Invincible filly having just her second career start following a seventh to Fontiton in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Fillies Preview (1000m) at Sandown on Australia Day.
Adding value to the winning Elwick Stakes trifecta only a quarter of a length back for third was then a stablemate to the winner, the fellow Luttrell-trained outsider Gee Gees Vicki ($34.90) who had trouble in the barriers but ran a barnstorming race to finish in the money.
Luttrell considered saving fellow Wordsmith filly Gee Gees Vicki for a two-year-olds’ maiden but knew she was going too good not to have a crack at the Elwick.
“The staff’s done a brilliant job with her,” he said.
“We got her right for today.
“I knew she was too good for the two-year-old maiden.
“It’s a crying shame she’s bumped into the good horse today.”
Race favourite Royalic ($4) from the Mornington stables of Mark Riley meanwhile could only manage to run eighth, beaten over five and a half lengths.
Last year’s Elwick Stakes winner was the Barry Campbell-trained Admiral who was defeated in an upset on Monday going down as the odds-on favourite to $35 roughie Streetwise Savoire in the Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes (1400m).
Last Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival Admiral backed up from the Elwick Stakes to complete a juvenile’s double with a further victory in the Gold Sovereign.
This year’s $100,000 Listed Gold Sovereign Stakes (1200m) runs at Launceston on February 25 and is the next aim for this year’s Elwick Stakes champ Gee Gees Top Notch with Luttrell confident she’ll be even better over the extra distance.
“The further she goes the better she’ll be,” he said.
“She’ll run in the Gold Sovereign then she’ll go to the paddock.”
