Blackiston Considering 2015 Futurity Stakes with Suavito

Four-year-old Suavito impressed her trainer Nigel Blackiston so much so during the spring that he is considering stepping the mare up to Group One racing level in the autumn.

Suavito could step up on her autumn return in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes on February 28.

After winning the Group 2 Momentum Energy Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on November 8, Suavito was sent to the spelling paddock for just under three months. She returned to training last week in an 800 metre jump-out on Friday, in which she finished third behind Hong Kong galloper Let Me Handle It and Nostradamus.

Blackiston is now considering raising the mare’s bar this upcoming season, with a potential tilt in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 28.

“She’ll trial again in two weeks’ time and have a stronger hit out and then we head towards the 28th in either the Futurity or the mares’ race on the same day,” Blackiston told Racing Victoria.

Suavito ran in two Group One races during the autumn – the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) and Australian Oaks (2400m) – but finished midfield in both.

Resuming in the spring, the four-year-old mare won the Catanach’s Jewellers Plate (1400m) before placing second in a Benchmark 90.

She had to trial to steward’s satisfaction after failing to leave the stalls in the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) on October 4 but finished third in the Group 3 Ladies Day Vase (1600m) eleven days later.

The mare then went on to win the Group 3 Eliza Park International Stakes (1600m) before hitting the line strongly in the Momentum Energy Stakes.

“She won a Group 2 and Group 3 over the Spring and it’d be nice to get a Group 1 placing if we can,” Blackiston said.

“If you look around, what’s going to be in it? Normally sometimes the Futurity can be a smaller field and hopefully it will be this year.

“She had a nice break and she’s come back bigger and stronger, she’s put on a bit of weight which is pleasing, and she’s in good order.”

Blackiston also revealed that Suavito’s main autumn goal is likely to be the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill on March 14.
