Scissor Kick was one of four horses resuming in the sprint race, with a starting price of $6 at The colt managed to win from Delectation ($3.60) in the final stages of the race after the Coolmore Stud Stakes runner-up took a wayward step, slowing his momentum.

Scissor Kick powered to the line, winning by a long neck with Harrier Jet ($9.50) another half length away in third.

Race favourite Inz’n’out ($3) missed the start and had to work hard to get into the race, after which he weakened out to finish five and three-quarter lengths behind the winner.

Scissor Kick has yet to win a Group One race but you wouldn’t know it by talking to his trainer Paul Messara.

“He is as good as any horse I have trained,” the trainer told Sky Racing.

“His Golden Rose run was the best of his career and I knew then how special he was.

“He has a massive engine and a lovely action.”

The three-year-old began his spring campaign in a similar style, winning the Rosebud and Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) before just missing out on victory in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) despite a valiant effort.

He got his second chance at Group One victory two months later in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) but by then the colt was ready for a spell.

Messara is keen to add a win from the highest level of racing to Scissor Kick’s resume in the upcoming autumn campaign.

He will aim the colt at the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 7, the same day as the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington which stable mate Panzer Division will be aimed at. The two will next be seen in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) on February 21 where they’ll have to unfortunately clash.

“The Randwick Guineas his aim,” Messara said.

“He has already cemented his position as one of the top colts around.

“Unfortunately they will clash in the Hobartville and my intention is to split them after that.

“I would prefer to keep Scissor Kick in Sydney.”
