Punters Love 2015 Bow Mistress Trophy Results

Race favourite I Love It from the Caulfield stables of John Salanitri saluted for the punters in Friday evening’s premier race at Hobart Racecourse taking out the Bow Mistress Trophy 2015.

A bumper field of 14 fillies and mares lined up in this year’s $150,000 Group 3 TasRacing.com.au Bow Mistress Trophy (1200m), $5 top fancy of which was lightly-raced Artie Schiller four-year-old I Love It.

The Melbourne-based mare came off a win over the distance at Ballarat back in November and added to her smart first-up record when winning the third of her four resuming runs to date.

Jockey Stephen Baster, who rode her for her past two Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival assignments, retained the ride first-up in the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival classic for an easy win in the Apple Isle.

On the line I Love It ($5) had nearly four lengths to spare over local hope Miss Middleton ($8.20), Barry Campbell’s Chruchill Downs six-year-old finishing runner-up for the second time on the trot at the track following her closer effort behind Sh’Bourne Spirit, seventh on Friday, in the Lady Lynette Fillies & Mares Plate.

Finishing off the Bow Mistress Trophy trifecta another length and a quarter further away, beaten over five lengths, was then the Stephen Theodore-trained Cranbourne visitor Lady Lakshmi ($7.70) who just nudged out Mark Riley’s Mornington-based pacesetter Grand Gallop ($16.60) for third.

I Love It has now won four of her eight career starts for an impressive 50% winning strike rate for just over $193,000 in prize money, Silanitri having targeted his mare for the Bow Mistress raid for some time.

Connections confirmed her trip over the Bass Strait after her win in November last year, but her trainer wasn’t able to join her for the Group 3 success.

Instead the stable was represented by his brother and part-owner as well as the mare’s breeder Frank Salanitri.

“This plan was hatched last year and it also is a very emotional win,” he told TasRacing post-win.

“We lost out brother Don and he always wanted to win a Group race with this mare and now she has achieved it so it is very special.

“We bred her and for her to do what she did today at only her eighth start is just fantastic and I’m sure she has a great future ahead of her.”

Winning hoop Baster was full of superlatives after the cruisy win having had an easy time settling I Love It before she hit her stride over the closing 500m before pushing on for a powerful victory.

“The mare was in cruise mode throughout the race and when we had to get going about the 500m she hauled them in pretty quickly and powered home to win easily,” Baster said.

“She has such a brilliant turn of foot and she showed that today.”

Also catching the eye despite the big winning margin was second past the post Miss Middleton who worked her way from well back in the field to finish second best.

She is likely to back up at Launceston’s twilight meet on February 18 in the $125,000 Group 3 Vamos Stakes (1400m) where Ladbrokes.com.au will likely have her as one of the top fancies.

The Bow Mistress Trophy winner I Love It however would not be backing up in the Vamos Stakes, Salanitri instead keen to take her home for a possible Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival bid.

“We take this mare home now and prepare her for some good mares’ races in the autumn,” he confirmed.
