The $4 million race is one of eight that makes up The Championships – a prestigious and lucrative race meeting in Sydney – all of which had their nominations close on Monday afternoon.

The 2015 Queen Elizabeth Stakes will be the autumn target for a number of top stayers and middle-distance runners, including Protectionist. The German import won the Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) last November by an impressive four lengths and racing fans are keen to see how he handles the spring under new trainer Kris Lees.

It’ll be an old-fashioned Melbourne Cup rematch on April 11 as runner-ups Red Cadeaux and Who Shot Thebarman both feature among the nominations.

Nine-year-old gelding Red Cadeaux will make his fifth trip out to Australia but the first time outside of the ‘race that stops the nation’ after Ed Dunlop revealed he would contest The Championships. The globetrotter was last seen running sixth in the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase (2400m) at Sha Tin on December 14.

Chris Waller’s Who Shot Thebarman was a surprise third in the Melbourne Cup with a starting price of $21 at but the six-year-old gelding is a proven stayer, winning the Group 3 Bart Cummings Stakes (2520m) back in October.

The leading Sydney trainer has nominated a further 16 horses for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, including Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) winner Adelaide, I’m Imposing, Junoob, Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) victor Sacred Falls, and Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) winner Preferment.

Cult hero The Cleaner also features among the nominations after a successful spring season that saw the seven-year-old gelding net his first black-type wins. The Cleaner swept past his rivals to win both the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) and Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) before finishing a commendable third in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m).

Along with Protectionist, Lees has also nominated classy mare Lucia Valentina, who won the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) in the spring. Donna Logan’s Rising Romance beat her home for second place in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) and the two mares could face off once again in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Other notable nominations for the $4 million race include Group 2 Sandown Classic (2400m) winner Au Revoir, Victoria Derby runner-up Bondeiger, Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) reigning champion Criterion, three time Group One winner Dissident, Green Moon, Group 1 Champion Stakes (2000m) winner Hampton Court, Lidari, and Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) victor Shooting To Win.

Scissor Kick won the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) first-up on Saturday and has been nominated by Paul Messara along with Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) winner Happy Trails.
